Chapter 4 - The Guests Witness EverythingA suffocating silence descended upon the grand entryway of the Mercer estate.

In the formal living room, twenty high-profile guests—including the local city councilman, two senior bank managers, and the president of Linda’s garden club—stood frozen with champagne flutes in their hands, staring wide-eyed at the uniformed deputies standing in the doorway.

"What... what is the meaning of this joke?!" Linda gasped, her voice trembling with rising panic as she looked down at the legal papers in her hands. "This is my house! It’s my sixtieth birthday!"

"Ma'am, this is no joke," Deputy Miller said firmly. "We have an emergency court order issued by Judge Sarah Jenkins. Mrs. Chloe Mercer has filed an immediate order of protection against Mr. Derek Mercer following an incident of physical assault and financial coercion reported this morning."

A collective, audible gasp rippled through the gathered guests in the living room.

"Assault?!" Derek roared, finally breaking out of his shock and marching toward the door, his face twisting in rage. "She’s lying! I never touched her! She's my wife! She's hysterical because I told her to help with my mother's party!"

"Mr. Mercer, step back," the deputy commanded, placing a heavy hand on his belt holster. "We have audio recordings, photographic evidence of scalp injury, and physical hair samples recovered by forensic officers twenty minutes ago."

Linda’s head snapped toward her son, her eyes wide with terror. "Derek... what did you do?"

"I didn't do anything!" Derek yelled, his voice cracking. "She’s setting me up!"

The process server stepped forward again, tapping the second document in the folder. "Furthermore, this notice serves as a formal Order to Vacate. The property located at 1420 Oakridge Lane is owned solely by Vanguard Assets LLC. The lease agreement under Derek Mercer has been revoked due to material breach and illegal encumbrance."

"Vanguard Assets?" Derek stumbled backward, his knees knocking against the entryway table. "No... no, that's a private investment group! I pay my mortgage to them!"

"Correction, Mr. Mercer," the deputy said, looking directly at him. "The sole managing director of Vanguard Assets LLC is Mrs. Chloe Mercer. She purchased the underlying deed six months ago when your original hard-money loan defaulted."

The champagne glass in Derek’s hand slipped through his fingers, crashing onto the marble floor and shattering into a hundred glittering pieces. Bourbon and glass sprayed across the entryway rug.

Linda looked like she was about to faint. "She... she owns my house?"

"She owns the entire property, ma'am," the deputy confirmed. "And per the judge’s order, you have until three o'clock this afternoon to gather your personal belongings and leave the premises. If you remain past three o'clock, you will be arrested for felony trespassing."

City Councilman Thomas, holding his champagne glass near the piano, set his drink down on a napkin, cleared his throat awkwardly, and looked at his wife.

"Linda... we, ah, we should probably get going," Councilman Thomas said softly. "Happy birthday, though."

Within five minutes, every single one of the twenty distinguished guests quietly filtered out the front door, stepping around the broken glass, avoiding eye contact with Linda and Derek as they hurried to their cars.

The sixtieth birthday party was over. And the real nightmare was just beginning.
