Chapter 6 - The Trap CollapsesThe next two weeks were a whirlwind of legal warfare.

Deprived of my income, the house, and access to our joint accounts, Derek’s life unravelled at breathtaking speed.

Without the illusion of wealth to protect him, his hard-money lenders and private bookies realized he was completely broke. Within days of his eviction, two collection agencies filed emergency liens against his remaining business accounts, freezing the few thousand dollars he had left.

He and his mother were forced to check into a dingy, weekly-rate motel near the highway—the very same motel Derek had once mockingly suggested we send my younger cousin to when she was struggling in college.

From her motel room, Linda tried to rally the family against me.

She launched a frantic campaign on social media, posting tearful videos claiming her "evil, gold-digging daughter-in-law" had stolen her family home and left a poor, defenseless senior citizen out in the cold on her sixtieth birthday.

Unfortunately for Linda, she didn't realize that Marcus and I were controlling the narrative.

In response to her online campaign, Marcus released a single, unedited video to the local news outlets and social media channels: the four-minute security camera footage from our kitchen on the morning of her birthday.

The video clearly showed Linda handing me the list of sixty dishes, laughing as Derek grabbed me by the hair, and watching approvingly as he dragged me toward the stove while yelling, "Cook it or get out!"

The public reaction was swift, brutal, and absolute.

Within twenty-four hours, the video went viral locally. The comments sections were flooded with thousands of people condemning Derek and Linda.

Linda’s garden club revoked her thirty-year membership. The local charity board she sat on issued a public statement severing all ties with her.

Even Derek’s few remaining commercial clients canceled their contracts, terrified of being associated with a man recorded committing domestic violence on camera.

On a rainy Tuesday morning, I sat in Marcus's office reviewing the latest settlement proposal sent over by Derek's court-appointed attorney.

"He's desperate, Chloe," Marcus said, sliding the proposal across the table. "His lawyer knows that if this goes to a criminal trial for domestic battery and financial fraud, Derek is facing two to four years in state prison."

I scanned the document. Derek was offering to sign a full, uncontested divorce agreement, waive all rights to any spousal support, and forfeit his remaining claims to any shared assets, provided I dropped the pending criminal charges for identity theft and financial fraud.

I tapped my pen against the glass desk.

"Tell his lawyer he has one more condition to meet," I said.

Marcus raised an eyebrow. "What condition?"

"He pays back every single cent he stole from my grandfather's trust fund—$112,000—plus legal fees," I replied firmly. "He can sell his luxury SUV, his golf club membership, his watch collection, and his stock options. If he doesn't deliver a certified cashier's check by Friday at noon, the criminal indictment goes to the grand jury."

Marcus grinned, taking a note. "I love working with you, Chloe."
