Chapter 7 - The Courthouse ShadowBy the end of the first week, the Rinaldi household had shifted from a war zone into something resembling an unpredictable, vibrant home.

Serena had established firm boundaries. No throwing objects indoors. No locking adults in the pantry. And absolutely no throwing heavy salt cellars at Uncle Marcus—though Serena privately admitted to herself that Marcus deserved at least half of what he got.

In return, the boys had begun to trust her. They showed her their secret hideouts in the sprawling gardens, shared their favorite comic books, and—most importantly—allowed her into the kitchen without throwing flour at her head.

On Friday afternoon, exactly one week after Serena started her job, Mrs. Chen drove Lucia over to the estate.

When the front gates opened and Lucia stepped out of the car, her eyes went wide as she stared up at the towering stone facade of the Rinaldi mansion.

“Mommy… do we live in a castle?” Lucia asked, clutching her pink backpack tightly against her chest.

“Temporarily, sweetheart,” Serena said, kneeling down to hug her daughter tightly, breathing in the scent of strawberry shampoo. “Come on. I want you to meet some people.”

Within ten minutes, Lucia had successfully integrated into the group. While Marco was initially hesitant about sharing his toy cars, Lucia’s calm, cheerful demeanor disarmed him within minutes. By dinner time, all five children were sitting around the kitchen island building an elaborate bridge out of spaghetti and miniature marshmallows, laughing so loudly it echoed down the hallway.

Vittorio, walking past the open kitchen door on his way to his study, stopped. He watched Lucia laugh at something Julian said, her bright eyes lighting up the room. Then his gaze shifted to Serena, who was standing by the stove pouring lemonade, her expression relaxed and genuinely happy for the first time since he met her.

For a man who lived his entire life behind glass walls and security ledgers, the warmth radiating from the kitchen felt foreign—and dangerously addictive.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out.

Vittorio stared at the screen, his fingers tightening around the metal casing of the phone. Daniel Valente. The corporate leech trying to strip Serena of her child.

Vittorio’s jaw locked. He slipped the phone back into his pocket, his dark eyes narrowing with sudden, silent resolve.
