Chapter 9 - Judgment DayThe courtroom of the Manhattan Family Court smelled of old paper, floor wax, and quiet desperation.

Serena sat at the wooden plaintiff's table, her fingers intertwined in her lap. Next to her sat her attorney, a tired-looking woman with kind eyes who was scanning a stack of legal briefs.
Across the aisle sat Daniel Valente, wearing an expensive tailored suit and whispering smugly with his high-priced attorney.
“Don't worry, Ms. Valente,” her lawyer whispered. “With the new employment seals and housing documentation Vittorio Rinaldi’s legal team filed yesterday, Daniel’s case for financial instability is completely dismantled.”
Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors opened, and the bailiff called out, “All rise for the Honorable Judge Marcus Vance.”
The proceedings moved swiftly. Daniel’s attorney tried every trick in the book, arguing that Serena’s previous temporary living arrangements proved an unstable environment for seven-year-old Lucia.
Judge Vance adjusted his glasses, reviewing the massive portfolio submitted by the Rinaldi estate’s legal representation.
“Mr. Valente,” Judge Vance said, his voice echoing through the quiet courtroom. “Your petition for shared custody rests entirely on the claim that the mother lacks stable income and permanent housing suitable for the child.”
“Yes, Your Honor,” Daniel said smugly, standing up. “As you can see from her previous tax filings—”
“Sit down, counselor,” the judge interrupted coolly. He held up a thick, embossed document bearing the seal of the New York Supreme Court. “I have before me a binding, five-year executive employment contract and permanent residential deed assignment issued by Rinaldi Holdings, guaranteeing Miss Valente full salary, medical benefits, and secure housing on estate grounds.”
Daniel’s smug expression vanished instantly, replaced by pale, open-mouthed panic.
“Furthermore,” Judge Vance continued, his eyes locking onto Daniel, “this court finds Miss Valente’s housing and financial standing not only stable, but exceptionally secure. Petition for custody modification is denied. Primary custody remains exclusively with the mother.”

Serena closed her eyes, a single tear breaking free and tracing down her cheek as the immense, crushing weight of the past year finally lifted from her shoulders.
