Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Gala

The Art Institute’s modern wing was transformed into an ethereal palace of white orchids, cascading crystal lights, and priceless modern sculpture. Over four hundred of the nation's wealthiest patrons mingled beneath the towering glass ceilings.

When the heavy glass doors opened to admit the Moretti party, the ambient chatter dropped by half.

Vincent Moretti entered first, radiant in a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding stature. Beside him, Isabella looked majestic in an emerald silk gown, her wheelchair steered with quiet elegance.

And at Vincent’s side walked Emma Carter.

Whispers exploded through the crowd like brushfire.

Emma wore an emerald-green velvet off-the-shoulder gown selected by Isabella's personal couturier. The deep jewel tone made her porcelain skin glow and brought out the fierce hazel of her eyes. Her dark hair was styled into an elegant chignon, secured with antique diamond pins. She wore no gaudy jewelry, only a simple, exquisite diamond pendant resting against her collarbone—a family heirloom Isabella had insisted she wear.

She looked stunning. Not like a server masquerading as nobility, but like an empress walking among merchants.

"Keep your head up, Miss Carter," Vincent murmured beside her, his hand resting possessively at the small of her back. The heat of his palm burned through the velvet fabric, sending shivers through her veins. "You belong in this room more than anyone here."

Across the crowded gallery, Victoria Langford stood beside Richard Sterling. Victoria wore an ostentatious crimson gown, her fingers clutching a champagne flute so tightly the glass groaned. Her eyes burned with pure malice as she watched Emma enter on Vincent’s arm.

"Look at her," Victoria hissed to Richard, her voice dripping with venom. "A gutter rat dressed in silk. Vincent is parading her around just to spit in my father's face."

"Patience, darling," Richard Sterling murmured, his aristocratic face smooth with arrogance. "The trap is already set. By midnight, she'll be leaving this museum in handcuffs."

For the first two hours, the evening proceeded with strained elegance. Emma stayed close to Isabella, engaging in witty, gracious conversations with museum curators and elderly philanthropists who were charmed by her genuine warmth. Emma didn't flatter them; she listened to them, treating them with the quiet dignity she gave her own father.

At ten o’clock, Isabella excused herself to the private benefactors' salon to review a gallery bequest. Emma stepped aside toward the terrace corridor to retrieve a glass of sparkling water.

As she passed a quiet alcove near the modern photography collection, a cold voice blocked her path.

"Quite an upgrade from the banquet kitchen, isn't it?"

Emma stopped. Victoria Langford stood blocking the archway, flanked by two sneering young socialites.

"Excuse me, Miss Langford," Emma said calmly, attempting to walk past.

Victoria stepped into her path, her eyes wild with vindictive delight. "Do you honestly think Vincent cares about you? You're a prop, Emma. A stray dog he picked up from the street to show everyone how powerful he is. The second this dispute with my father settles, he will toss you right back into the gutter where you belong."

"Even if that were true," Emma replied, her voice cool and steady, "the gutter is still cleaner than the company you keep."

Victoria’s face twisted in fury. Before she could retort, Richard Sterling approached, casually holding a small velvet pouch in his hand. He stepped past Emma, deliberately brushing against her evening clutch before melting into the gallery crowd.

Emma felt the deliberate bump. Her instincts flared instantly.

Suddenly, a commotion erupted near the entrance of the wing.

Julian Langford, a stocky, silver-haired man with cold, calculating eyes, walked into the gallery accompanied by the museum’s chief curator and two uniformed Chicago police officers.

"Stop the music!" Julian’s booming voice commanded.

The string ensemble cut out. The crowd gathered quickly around the gallery floor.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the disruption," Julian announced, his voice oozing feigned regret. "However, a private tragedy has occurred tonight. My family brought the historic *Empress Brooch*—a five-hundred-thousand-dollar platinum-and-sapphire heirloom—to be donated to the museum tonight. Twenty minutes ago, it vanished from the private viewing room."

Murmurs of shock rippled through the gallery.

Victoria stepped forward, pointing an accusatory finger directly at Emma. "Father! I saw this woman lurking near the private viewing suite only moments ago! She’s not one of us—she’s a temp worker hired by the Morettis!"

The crowd turned like a pack of wolves, eyes pinning Emma against the marble archway.

"That's a lie," Emma said, standing tall despite the suffocating pressure.

"Is it?" Richard Sterling scoffed, stepping beside Victoria. "Then you won't mind opening your evening bag for the officers, will you?"

One of the police officers stepped forward, looking uncomfortable under the gaze of Chicago’s elite. "Miss, if you could just open your purse—"

"Touch that bag, and you will spend the rest of your career guarding an abandoned quarry in Rockford."

Vincent Moretti strode through the crowd.

The circle parted instantly. Vincent’s face was an mask of lethal calm, but the vein pulsing at his temple betrayed the fury beneath. He walked up to Emma, placing himself between her and the police, his presence instantly altering the gravity of the room.

"Julian," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You are playing a very stupid game."

"This isn't a game, Vincent!" Julian barked, puffing his chest out. "A historic piece of jewelry is missing! Are you saying your... *companion*... is above the law?"

"No," Vincent replied coldly. "I'm saying your daughter is an amateur."

Vincent raised a hand. Marcus Vance immediately stepped forward, holding a high-resolution tablet connected to the museum's private security network.

Vincent turned the screen toward Julian Langford and the surrounding crowd.

"Ten minutes ago," Vincent announced, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings, "Richard Sterling took the brooch from the viewing case, walked into this corridor, and slipped it into Miss Carter's bag while Victoria distracted her. Unfortunately for you, Julian, my private security firm installed the new closed-circuit fiber cameras in this wing last Tuesday."

On the screen, in crystalline 4K resolution, Richard Sterling could be seen clearly sliding the velvet pouch into Emma's purse while Victoria stepped in front of her.

The collective gasp from the crowd was deafening.

Richard Sterling went chalk-white. Victoria’s knees visibly buckled.

Vincent stepped directly into Julian Langford’s personal space.

"Officer," Vincent commanded, without looking away from Julian’s terrified face. "Arrest Richard Sterling for grand larceny and filing a false police report. And if Julian and Victoria Langford are not out of this building in sixty seconds, release the footage of Richard's confession directly to the Cook County State's Attorney."

Julian grabbed Victoria’s arm, his face pale with humiliation and defeat. As security moved in on Richard Sterling, the Langfords were forced to walk the gauntlet of the very crowd they had sought to command—now looking at them with unvarnished disgust.

Emma stood frozen, her heart racing.

Vincent turned back to her. In front of four hundred stunned aristocrats, he reached out, his thumb gently brushing across her cheek to wipe away a stray drop of sweat.

"I told you, Emma," Vincent whispered, his voice soft enough only for her to hear. "No one touches you while you're with me."
