Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The aftermath of Julian Langford's arrest sent shockwaves through the American financial markets.

By the end of the week, Langford Logistics was fully absorbed into Moretti Global Enterprises. The Langford family mansion was seized by federal marshals to satisfy millions of dollars in back restitution, and Victoria Langford’s bail was formally revoked after the district attorney upgraded her charges to attempted aggravated battery with a toxic chemical.

The dynasty that had terrorized Chicago for three decades had been wiped off the map in less than two weeks.

On Saturday evening, the atmosphere at the Moretti estate was completely transformed.

The oppressive gloom that had hung over the limestone mansion for three years had evaporated. Fireplaces crackled warmly in every hearth, fresh white lilies filled the crystal vases, and the sounds of laughter echoed from the grand dining room.

Thomas Carter sat at the head of the long mahogany table, looking robust, healthy, and happy. His heart condition was fully managed under the premier care of Northwestern’s medical director, and his skin had regained its youthful warmth.

Beside him sat Lily, chattering excitedly with Isabella Moretti about her upcoming summer research fellowship in corporate law—a program Isabella had personally sponsored.

Emma sat across from Vincent, watching her family with a heart so full it felt close to bursting.

"More roast beef, Mr. Carter?" Isabella offered warmly, pouring a dash of sparkling cider into Thomas's glass. "The chef prepared it without sodium, exactly as your doctor instructed."

"Mrs. Moretti, if I eat any more, I'll have to buy new trousers," Thomas chuckled, shaking his head with a humble grin. "I never dreamed my Emma would be running around with such high-class folk. But I'm grateful. You've given my girls a future."

"Your daughter gave me my life back, Thomas," Isabella replied softly, looking across the table at Emma with deep affection. "And she gave my son his soul back."

Vincent reached beneath the linen tablecloth, his warm, strong hand finding Emma's. Their fingers intertwined, sharing a private, electric rhythm that made Emma’s pulse race.

After dinner, as the snow began to dust the private courtyard, Vincent led Emma up the spiral staircase to the estate’s private observatory roof.

The city of Chicago stretched out beneath them—a dazzling, endless ocean of gold and diamond lights reflecting off the dark, icy expanse of Lake Michigan. The cold night air was crisp, but Vincent wrapped his heavy wool overcoat around Emma’s shoulders, pulling her back against his broad chest.

Emma leaned into his warmth, watching the skyline.

"It's hard to believe," she whispered softly. "Two months ago, I was counting pennies at my kitchen table, terrified that a three-hundred-dollar gas bill would put us on the street. I thought my whole life would be spent scrubbing floors and dodging people like Victoria Langford."

Vincent rested his chin against the top of her head, his arms wrapping securely around her waist.

"You were never meant for the shadows, Emma," Vincent said, his voice deep and velvet. "The world just didn't see what was right in front of them."

"And what do you see, Vincent?" she asked, turning in his arms to look up into his striking gray eyes.

Vincent reached into his coat pocket. He pulled out a small, dark velvet box and snapped it open.

Inside rested a ring of unimaginable beauty. A flawless three-carat cushion-cut emerald, surrounded by a halo of antique diamonds that caught the city lights like a fallen star.

Emma gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Vincent..."

"That emerald belonged to my great-grandmother," Vincent said, his voice trembling with an emotion he had never shown to another living soul. "She wore it when she arrived in Chicago with nothing but thirty dollars in her pocket and the courage to build an empire. My mother gave it to me this morning. She told me it was time it belonged to a real woman."

He dropped to one knee on the snowy terrace—the exact same way he had knelt beside his mother on that fateful night in the ballroom.

"Emma Carter," Vincent said, looking up into her eyes with raw, unvarnished devotion. "You saved my mother. You saved my family. But more than that, you saved me from becoming a monster of pride and stone. You are my equal in every way. I don't want a trophy, and I don't want an empire without you to share it with."

His fingers gently took her trembling left hand.

"Will you marry me?"

Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over Emma's eyelashes, freezing into tiny diamonds against her cheeks. She didn't hesitate. She didn't let fear or social division cross her mind for a single fraction of a second.

"Yes," Emma breathed, dropping to her knees in the snow beside him and wrapping her arms around his neck. "Yes, Vincent. A thousand times yes."

May you like

Vincent pulled her against him, kissing her with a fierce, possessive tenderness under the endless canopy of stars.
