Chapter 10 - The Head of the TableWalking down the aisle on a crisp October evening, surrounded by autumn colors and warm light, I saw Julian standing at the alter.

He looked dashing in a dark tuxedo, his eyes fixed entirely on me as if no one else existed in the world. When I reached him, he took my hand—the same hand he had kissed in my parents’ kitchen a year ago—and held it tightly.

The ceremony was beautiful, swift, and filled with genuine warmth.

When the reception began in the grand ballroom of the Mercer estate, the tables were loaded with incredible food, fine wine, and joyful laughter.

Julian stood up at the head of the main table, holding a crystal glass of champagne. The room grew quiet as he looked down at me, his smile brilliant and proud.

“A year ago,” Julian spoke into the microphone, his deep voice carrying across the ballroom, “I walked into a house where the most brilliant, resilient, and beautiful woman I had ever met was hidden away in the kitchen, made to feel invisible by people who couldn't see her worth.”

He looked around the room, making eye contact with our friends and colleagues.

“In life, we don't choose the family we are born into. But we choose who we stand beside. Claire built her strength in the shadows, but tonight, and for the rest of our lives, she sits at the head of the table.”

The room erupted into thunderous applause and cheers.

Julian sat down beside me, wrapping his arm around my waist, and pressed a soft kiss to my temple.

I looked out at the warm, glowing room, holding my husband’s hand beneath the table. I was no longer the disgraced daughter sitting by the trash cans. I was no longer the invisible servant scrubbing dirty pans in Greenwich.

I was Claire Mercer. And I was finally home.
