Chapter 9 - The Wedding at the EstateThe following autumn, almost a year after that fateful Thanksgiving dinner, the Mercer estate hosted the wedding of the season.

It wasn't a circus for high-society reporters or corporate posturing. It was an intimate, breathtaking gathering of two hundred guests—colleagues, friends, port workers I had helped support, and people who genuinely cared about us.

The grand pavilion was decorated with white roses, twinkling warm lights, and soft classical music played by a live orchestra.

I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the bridal suite, wearing an exquisite silk gown with intricate lace detailing along the train. My hair was styled in soft waves, anchored by an heirloom pearl hairpiece that Julian’s grandmother had passed down to me.

There was a soft knock at the door. Rebecca Vance walked in, holding a small silver tray with an unopened letter.

“This just arrived via courier, Claire,” Rebecca said gently. “It’s from your mother.”

I took the envelope. I recognized Margaret’s neat, cursive handwriting. I opened it and read the brief lines:

Claire, I know I have no right to write to you. Your father and I read about the wedding in the paper. We are living quietly now. Ryan is working hard, though he speaks very little. Natalie stays with her children. I spent my life trying to build a perfect family for the world to see, and in doing so, I destroyed the only daughter who ever truly loved us. I don't ask for your forgiveness—I know I don't deserve it. I only hope you have the life you always deserved. — Mom

I folded the letter neatly and placed it in my drawer. I didn't feel anger anymore. The weight of their cruelty had finally washed away, leaving behind a quiet, clean peace.

“Are you ready, Claire?” Rebecca asked warmly.

I looked at my reflection one last time, smiling. “I’m ready.”
