Chapter 5 - The Unseen Storm

Three days later.

The morning sun filtered through the high, arched windows of the Upper East Side brownstone, casting warm golden light across polished hardwood floors and soaring ceilings.

The house was immaculate. A sprawling, fully equipped kitchen opened into a sunlit dining area overlooking a private, walled garden bursting with green ivy and blooming white hydrangeas. Upstairs, a master suite connected directly to a nursery fitted with a hand-carved wooden crib, soft organic linens, and plush velvet armchairs.

Abigail stood in the center of the living room, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea, wearing a soft cream cashmere sweater and comfortable trousers provided by Isabella.

She still couldn't entirely process it.

Two security officers stood discreetly near the front gates outside, and a private chef—a middle-aged woman named Mrs. Gable who had worked for the Romano family for twenty years—was quietly prepping fresh soup in the kitchen.

A soft chime sounded at the front door.

Mrs. Gable answered it, ushering in Isabella Romano, who carried three shopping bags from an elite baby boutique in Soho.

“Good morning!” Isabella beamed, setting the bags onto the dining table and rushing over to hug Abigail gently. “How did you sleep? Did the baby kick last night?”

“He kept me up until three in the morning,” Abigail laughed softly, her dark eyes sparkling with a health and happiness that hadn't been there forty-eight hours ago. “Isabella, you didn't need to bring more clothes. The nursery is already overflowing!”

“Nonsense,” Isabella dismissed with a wave of her hand. “A Romano godson can never have too many organic cotton onesies.”

Abigail smiled, though a faint note of hesitation touched her face. “Isabella... where is Matteo? I haven't seen him since he dropped me off here on Friday night.”

Isabella’s playful smile faded slightly, replaced by a subtle, guarded look.

“My brother is... handling business, Abigail,” Isabella said carefully, sitting down at the dining table. “When Matteo called in those Sinclair construction bonds on Thursday night, Richard Sinclair didn't just sit back and take it. He’s been attempting to form an alliance with two rival shipping syndicates in New Jersey to block our port access.”

Abigail’s breath caught. “Because of me? Matteo is risking his business because of what happened to me?”

“No,” Isabella said firmly, taking Abigail’s hand. “Because of what Richard and Vanessa Sinclair represent. They think their money buys them the right to destroy people. Matteo is simply reminding them of the natural order of things.”

Before Abigail could reply, the heavy oak front door opened.

Matteo walked inside.

He wore a dark charcoal suit, his tie slightly loosened at the throat, looking tired but formidable. His sharp gray eyes immediately swept the living room, relaxing the moment they landed on Abigail.

“Isabella,” Matteo greeted his sister with a nod, then walked directly over to Abigail. He reached out, his hand gently resting against her cheek for a fraction of a second, checking her color. “How are you feeling today?”

“I’m feeling wonderful, Matteo,” Abigail said, her heart doing a familiar, fluttering flip at his closeness. “Dr. Chen came by at nine. He said my blood pressure is completely back to normal.”

“Good,” Matteo murmured, a faint smile touching his lips.

He turned to his sister. “Isabella, leave us for a few minutes, please. I need to speak with Abigail privately.”

Isabella nodded instantly, picking up her coat. “I’ll be in the garden calling the decorator for the baby shower.” She flashed Abigail a warm, mischievous wink before slipping through the glass doors into the courtyard.

Matteo motioned for Abigail to sit on the comfortable velvet sofa. He sat beside her, pulling a crisp, white legal folder from his leather briefcase.

“What’s going on, Matteo?” Abigail asked, her pulse quickening slightly. “Isabella told me about the Sinclairs.”

“Richard Sinclair is desperate,” Matteo said flatly. “He attempted to file a civil injunction against my holding company this morning, claiming I used corporate coercion to ruin his firm.”

“Will it work?”

Matteo let out a short, dark laugh. “No. My legal team tore his filing to shreds before the judge even finished his coffee. But Vanessa Sinclair has taken a different approach.”

He opened the folder, revealing a series of printed news articles and social media posts from high-society blogs.

“She’s attempting to launch a public relations smear campaign,” Matteo explained, pointing to a headline: FROM WAITRESS TO MILLION-DOLLAR MISTRESS: THE REAL STORY BEHIND THE ROMANO SCANDAL.

Abigail’s blood ran cold. She read the cruel, twisted words printed beneath her photograph: claims that she was a professional grifter who had orchestrated the gala incident to extort millions from the Romano estate, using her pregnancy as a weapon.

“She... she released this to the press?” Abigail whispered, her hands shaking as she held the paper.

“She sold it to three major tabloids an hour ago,” Matteo said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy tone. “She believes that by ruining your reputation, she can force me to back off her father’s bonds to avoid a public scandal.”

Abigail sank back against the sofa cushions, a heavy knot of dread tightening in her stomach. “I knew this was too good to be true... The media will destroy my name. When my son grows up, he’ll read these lies—”

“No,” Matteo interrupted, his large hand folding firmly over hers, stopping her trembling. “He won't.”

Abigail looked up into his fierce, unyielding gray eyes. “How can you stop them? It’s already on the internet, Matteo. The Sinclairs have millions to throw at public relations firms.”

Matteo leaned closer to her. The dark, lethal presence that had terrified Mark Vance and Richard Sinclair radiated from him, but his gaze on her remained intensely gentle.

“The Sinclairs have money, Abigail,” Matteo said softly, his thumb tracing the soft curve of her knuckles. “I have absolute control over the network that owns those tabloids. I bought eighty percent of the parent media group forty minutes ago.”

Abigail stared at him, completely speechless. “You... you bought the media company?”

“I bought the company, killed the story, and terminated Vanessa Sinclair’s public relations firm,” Matteo stated smoothly. “By noon today, every tabloid that printed her lie will issue a full, formal retraction and apology.”

Abigail let out a breathless, stunned laugh. “Matteo... you can’t just buy entire industries every time someone insults me!”

“I can,” Matteo replied without a trace of humor. “And I will.”

He looked at her hands holding his, his expression growing serious, filled with a quiet, profound emotion that made the air in the room feel heavy and warm.

“Vanessa Sinclair believes you are vulnerable because you stand alone,” Matteo murmured, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register. “She believes she can attack you because there is no official bond between you and my family.”

Abigail’s breath hitched. “What are you saying?”

Matteo reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it, revealing a breathtaking, flawless six-carat cushion-cut diamond set in platinum, glittering intensely in the morning sunlight.

Abigail’s heart stopped. She stared at the ring, then up at his dark gray eyes in sheer, utter shock.

“Matteo...” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “What is this?”

“This is protection, Abigail,” Matteo said softly, his gaze locked onto hers with an intensity that burned through her chest. “And it is truth. I have spent eight years searching for the woman who saved my sister. I did not find a memory—I found the most courageous, selfless woman I have ever known.”

He took her right hand, holding it gently in his.

“Marry me,” Matteo commanded softly, though his voice carried a quiet, vulnerable hope. “Become my wife. Let me give your son my name, my fortune, and my protection. Let the world see that anyone who touches you touches the entire House of Romano.”

Abigail stared at him, her chest heaving, tears flooding her eyes as her world spun on its axis.
