Chapter 7 - The Crown of the Matriarch

Three weeks after the engagement gala at the St. Regis, the morning sun rose over a quiet, crisp New York skyline.
Inside the private maternity wing of St. Jude’s Medical Center—the entire top floor cleared and guarded by two dozen discreet Romano security personnel—the atmosphere was calm, pristine, and intensely private.
Abigail lay in the master hospital suite, wearing a soft ivory gown, her dark hair fan out across white pillows. She looked exhausted, her skin flushed, but her brown eyes were filled with an radiant, overwhelming peace.
Resting on her chest was a newborn baby boy.
He had a thick tuft of dark hair, smooth skin, and when his tiny eyes fluttered open for the first time, they revealed a striking, intense shade of stormy gray.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, his arm wrapped securely around Abigail’s shoulders, was Matteo.
The powerful, ruthless billionaire who managed billions of dollars and commanded armies of men was completely silent. He stared down at the tiny infant resting on his wife’s chest, his breathing shallow, his face filled with an awe so profound it brought tears to his dark gray eyes.
“He’s perfect, Matteo,” Abigail whispered softly, her voice weak but full of warmth, reaching out to gently touch her son’s tiny cheek.
Matteo reached down, his large, calloused index finger gently curling into the baby’s tiny, fierce grip. The infant held on with surprising strength.
“He has your strength, my love,” Matteo whispered, leaning down to press a long, tender kiss against Abigail’s forehead. “What shall we name him?”
Abigail looked up into her husband’s eyes, a soft smile touching her lips. “Leo. Leo Matteo Romano.”
Matteo’s jaw tightened with deep emotion. Leo—meaning Lion. A child born not from fear or corporate alliances, but from pure, unyielding protection and love.
“Leo Romano,” Matteo repeated softly, his voice thick. “An honorable name for my eldest son.”
The suite door opened gently, and Isabella walked inside, holding a massive bouquet of white roses and a small wooden box. Tears were already streaming down her cheeks as she saw the baby.
“Is he here?” Isabella gasped softly, setting the flowers down and hurrying to the bedside. “Oh, Abigail... he’s breathtaking!”
Abigail smiled, carefully adjusting the baby so Isabella could see his face. “Meet your nephew, Isabella. Meet Leo.”
Isabella covered her mouth, letting out a soft, joyful sob. She opened the small wooden box she was holding, pulling out the tarnished sterling silver chain with the tiny horse charm—the very bracelet Abigail had dropped in the rain eight years ago.
“I had the jeweler clean it and attach it to a solid gold rattle,” Isabella whispered, setting the exquisite, custom piece near the baby’s blanket. “A reminder that grace always finds its way back home.”
Matteo stood up, kissing his sister’s cheek, then walked toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking Manhattan.
Standing in the corridor outside the glass doors was Lev, holding an encrypted satellite phone and a thick leather folder. Matteo stepped out into the hallway, pulling the door closed behind him to keep the room quiet.
“Report, Lev,” Matteo commanded quietly.
“Richard Sinclair filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this morning, Boss,” Lev reported smoothly. “His board forced him to resign as CEO, and the city has revoked his pier development licenses. Vanessa Sinclair has officially left the state for a small town in New England after her social memberships were permanently cancelled.”
Matteo listened without a trace of pity in his eyes. “And Mark Vance?”
“He entered a guilty plea to federal wire fraud and identity theft an hour ago,” Lev added. “Sentenced to seven years at Fort Dix. His assets have been seized to pay full restitution to Miss... excuse me, to Mrs. Romano’s new foundation.”
Matteo looked through the glass window at his wife holding their newborn son, surrounded by warm sunlight and flowers.
“Good,” Matteo said flatly. “Close the files. We are done with them.”
“Understood, sir.” Lev bowed his head respectfully and walked down the corridor.
Matteo walked back into the private suite, closing the door softly behind him. The peaceful sound of Abigail softly hummed a lullaby filled the room.
He walked over to the bed, sitting beside her, wrapping his broad arms around both her and the baby, pulling them close against his chest.
“Is everything settled?” Abigail asked quietly, resting her head against his shoulder.
May you like
“Everything is settled forever, my love,” Matteo murmured into her hair. “The world is quiet now.”
Abigail closed her eyes, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her cheek, the warm weight of her son against her chest, and the absolute, unshakeable sanctuary of her new family.
