Chapter 4 - The Sound of Breaking GlassInside the ballroom, the silence was finally broken by a single, sharp intake of breath from somewhere near the back of the room.

Ethan’s hand was still raised slightly, frozen in mid-air. He looked down at Claire, his chest heaving, the adrenaline slowly draining out of his system to be replaced by a cold, sickening wave of panic.

"Claire..." Ethan started, his voice cracking slightly. "I... I didn't mean... you pushed me—"

"You hit me," Claire said. Her voice wasn't shaking. It was smoother than glass, sharper than a scalpel. She reached up with her right hand and touched her bruised cheekbone where his signet ring had left a crescent-shaped abrasion. "In front of three hundred people. In front of your investors."

"Claire, honey, let's go back to the suite," Vanessa injected smoothly, stepping forward with a mask of manufactured concern, though her eyes danced with glee. "You're overwrought. Let's not make a scene—"

Claire didn't scream at her. She didn't lash out. She simply turned her hazel eyes onto Vanessa with such absolute, bone-chilling contempt that Vanessa actually took a half-step backward, her manicured fingers clutching the strap of her crimson evening gown.

"You," Claire whispered, "have eleven months left of employment before I strip this company down to the studs and sell the corporate logo to a scrap metal yard. Enjoy your bonus while it clears."

Before Vanessa could formulate a retort, the heavy mahogany double doors at the rear of the ballroom slammed open with a force that rattled the crystal chandeliers overhead.

The three hundred guests turned as one, gasping as three broad-shouldered men in dark overcoats strode past the velvet ropes and stepped directly onto the polished parquet floor.

Julian Hale didn't look at the crystal chandeliers. He didn't look at the trembling investors or the terrified catering staff. His dark eyes scanned the room until they locked onto a single target: Ethan Cole, standing frozen beneath the glowing stage lights with his hand still hovering in the air.

Julian began to walk. Marcus and Dominic flanked him like wolves closing in on a wounded elk.

"What—what are you doing?" an investor near the front stammered, trying to block Julian’s path. "Who invited you? Security, get these men out of here—"

Julian didn't break stride. He didn't even look down at the man. He simply raised one thick, calloused hand, pushed the investor aside with casual, devastating force, and sent the man stumbling backward into a stack of empty champagne flutes.
