Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of an EmpireJulian shook Ethan once—a violent, rattling motion that made the billionaire developer’s teeth chatter in his skull—before dropping him unceremoniously onto the floor.

Ethan stumbled backward, tripping over the hem of his own trousers, and crashed hard onto his hands and knees amid the glittering shards of broken glass. His tuxedo jacket was torn at the shoulder, his silk tie pulled askew, his pristine public image shattered beyond recognition in less than three minutes.

"Look at you," Julian spat, towering over him, wiping his hands on a linen napkin he plucked from a passing waiter’s tray. "Six years ago, you were living out of a rusted Jeep, begging our father for a loan to keep your failing contracting business afloat. Our sister handed you her inheritance. She washed your clothes, she balanced your books, she kissed your face when you were crying like a baby over lost bids. And this is how you pay her back?"

Arthur Vance, the formidable venture capital titan seated near the front, slowly stood up from his chair. He looked down at Ethan, his expression hardening into stone.

"Is this true, Ethan?" Vance demanded, his voice carrying across the silent hall. "Is the capital backing your riverfront project tied to your wife’s personal family trust?"

Ethan scrambled backward on his hands and knees, frantic, sweating profusely, looking around the room for a single friendly face. There were none. Investors were pulling out their phones, furiously texting their chief financial officers to pull out of Cole Urban Development before the bell rang tomorrow morning.

"Arthur—wait—let me explain—" Ethan stammered, holding up a bleeding hand where a glass shard had sliced his palm. "We can restructure—"

"There is nothing to restructure," Marcus Hale said smoothly, stepping forward and pulling a thick manila folder from his overcoat. He tossed it onto Arthur Vance’s table, letting the pages fan out across the white linen cloth. "That is an independent forensic audit of Cole Urban Development commissioned by our firm thirty days ago. It details twelve million dollars in unallocated corporate debt, systematic embezzlement through shell companies registered in Delaware—managed, curiously enough, by Ms. Grant here—and a structural deficit that makes the Apex Project technically insolvent."

Vance snatched the top page, his eyes scanning the numbers. As he read, the color drained from his face. He looked up at Ethan with undisguised revulsion.

"You defrauded us," Vance whispered.

"No! It’s a smear campaign! They’re trying to ruin me!" Ethan shrieked from the floor, pointing a trembling finger at Claire. "She’s crazy! She planned this! She’s trying to steal my company!"

Claire looked down at her husband—the man she had loved, the man she had made. She reached slowly into her evening clutch, her fingers wrapping around the small, thermal-printed ultrasound photograph.

She pulled it out.

She didn't throw it at him. She didn't scream. She walked over to the mahogany table where the white roses sat around their framed wedding photograph, and she placed the tiny black-and-white strip of paper right beside the frame.

"You don't have a company left to steal, Ethan," Claire said, her voice cutting through the hall like a winter wind. "And you certainly don't have a family."

She turned around, looping her arm through Julian’s right elbow, while Marcus and Dominic fell into step beside her.

"Boys," Claire said softly. "Let’s go home. I need to pack."

As the four of them walked down the central aisle—the three towering brothers shielding their sister from the flashbulbs and the stunned, silent crowd—not a single person moved to stop them.

Ethan Cole remained on his hands and knees in the broken glass, staring up at the empty stage, finally realizing that the empire he thought he built was nothing more than a house of cards, and he had just blown out the foundation.
