Chapter 1 - The Broken Promise(Word count target: ~800 words)

The echo of a falling glass vase shattered the quiet afternoon in the Miller household. Daniel stood on the porch, key halfway into the front lock, his stomach dropping instantly.

"I told you to pick that up!"

The harsh, stinging screech belonged to his sister, Melissa. Daniel unlocked the door and stepped inside, his work bag slipping from his fingers.

The scene in the hallway looked ripped straight out of a nightmare. Four-year-old Lily was curled into a ball near the bottom step, her tiny pink socks bunched around her ankles. Aunt Melissa stood over her, her face contorted in anger, one hand tangled tightly in Lily’s soft hair to keep the toddler from crawling toward the stairs.

"Ethan!" Lily screamed, her voice hoarse from crying. "Ethan, help!"

Ethan, Daniel’s eight-year-old son, was at the top of the landing. His face was pale, his small hands clutching the wooden railing so hard his knuckles were white. He didn't hesitate. He scrambled down the wooden stairs, his feet slapping loudly against the floorboards.

"Let her go!" Ethan yelled, shoving his small frame between Melissa and his sobbing little sister.

"Get out of the way, Ethan! She threw her milk on the rug!" Melissa barked, lunging forward to grab Lily again.

"No!" Ethan planted both feet firmly on the floor. He spread his arms wide, transforming his eight-year-old body into a physical shield between his trembling sister and their aunt. "Don't touch her!"

"What is going on here?" Daniel’s voice sliced through the air like a blade.

Melissa froze mid-reach, her arm stiffening. Ethan turned his tear-streaked face toward the front door, his breath coming in jagged, desperate gasps.

"Daniel..." Melissa stammered, pulling her hand back instantly and smoothing down her blouse. "You’re home early. It’s... it’s nothing. Lily threw a tantrum and spilled her drink, and I was just trying to discipline her—"

"Disciplining her?" Daniel stepped forward, his eyes locked onto the faint red fingerprints blooming across Ethan’s forearm, right where Melissa had grabbed him moments earlier. His voice dropped to a deadly, quiet frequency. "Why was my son standing between you and his sister?"

"He misunderstood—"

"Ethan," Daniel cut in, kneeling beside his children. "Look at me."

Ethan didn't move away from Lily immediately. He kept one arm tucked protectively around his sister’s back until Daniel reached out and gently took both of them into his arms. The second Ethan felt his father’s chest, the dam broke. He wept uncontrollably, his tiny shoulders shaking against Daniel’s suit jacket.

"She... she grabs us, Dad," Ethan whispered, his voice buried in Daniel's shirt. "When you go to work. She told us if we said anything, you’d think we were bad."

Daniel felt the world shift under his feet. He looked up at Melissa, his eyes colder than ice.

"Get out," Daniel said softly.

"Daniel, be reasonable! I’m your sister! You can’t listen to an eight-year-old over your own family!"

"I said," Daniel stood up, his height dominating the room as he pulled both children behind him, "get out of my house before I call the police."
