Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Dark(Word count target: ~1,800 words)

The heavy front door clicked shut, sealing the house off from Melissa, but the air inside remained thick with unspoken horror. Daniel carried Lily upstairs to her bedroom, holding Ethan tightly by the hand. Lily was exhausted from crying; within twenty minutes of laying in her father's arms, her breathing slowed, and she drifted into a restless sleep, clutching her faded plush rabbit.

Daniel crept out of her room and walked down the dimly lit hallway toward Ethan’s bedroom. The door was cracked open. Ethan was sitting on the edge of his mattress, staring intently at his own sneakers, his knees tucked into his chest.

Daniel pushed the door open gently and knocked on the wooden frame. "Ethan? Mind if I sit down?"

Ethan nodded without raising his head.

Daniel pulled up the small desk chair and sat across from his son. He took a slow breath, trying to tame the raging fire of guilt burning in his chest. How had he missed this? He had been working sixty hours a week at the accounting firm since his wife passed away three years ago. He thought hiring his sister—offering her a place to stay while paying her a generous allowance to watch the kids—was the perfect solution. Family was supposed to be safe.

"Your sister is fast asleep," Daniel began, keeping his voice soft and grounded. "She's safe, Ethan. You did an amazing job keeping her safe."

Ethan wiped his cheek with the back of his sleeve. "Is Aunt Melissa mad at me?"

"I don't care if she's mad," Daniel answered honestly. "What matters is how you and Lily are feeling. Look at me, buddy."

Ethan lifted his eyes. They were swollen and bloodshot. "I thought you wouldn't believe me if I said anything. Aunt Melissa said adults always stick together. She said if I complained, you’d realize how hard it is to take care of us and... and send us to a boarding school."

Daniel felt as though someone had driven a fist into his stomach. He moved off the chair, dropping to his knees on the rug in front of Ethan, taking both of the boy's hands in his own.

"Listen to me very carefully, Ethan," Daniel said, looking directly into his son's eyes. "Nothing—and I mean nothing—could ever make me leave you or Lily. You are my entire world. Aunt Melissa lied to you so she could exert control. She used your love for your sister against you, and that was cruel."

"She made Lily stand in the corner for two hours yesterday because she dropped a crayon," Ethan blurted out, the dam finally breaking completely. The secret burden he had carried for months began pouring out. "And when Lily started crying because her legs hurt, Aunt Melissa pinched her arm and told her to shut up. I tried to give Lily my juice box, but Aunt Melissa took it and poured it down the sink. She said bad kids don't get treats."

Daniel's teeth ground together so hard his jaw throbbed. "Has she hit you before, Ethan?"

Ethan hesitated, staring down at his fingers. "She... she slapped my hand with a wooden spoon once when I tried to pull her away from Lily last month. And she called us spoiled brats every day after you left for work."

"Why didn't you text me on my phone?" Daniel asked, his heart aching. "I gave you that emergency phone for a reason."

"She took it," Ethan whispered. "She locked it in her nightstand. She said I was only allowed to use it if the house was on fire."

Daniel pulled his son into a tight embrace, burying his face in the boy's hair. "I am so sorry, Ethan. I am so, so sorry I didn't see it sooner. You shouldn't have had to be the hero. You’re eight years old. You’re supposed to play baseball, build Lego sets, and worry about homework. Being the shield... that was my job."

"I was just trying to be a big brother," Ethan sobbed into his father's shoulder.

"You're the best big brother in the world," Daniel murmured. "But starting right now, the job is mine again. You don't have to carry this anymore."

They stayed like that for a long time until Ethan's breathing evened out and he fell asleep against Daniel's chest. Daniel laid him under his blankets, kissed his forehead, and walked out into the dark hallway.

Downstairs, the quiet of the house felt unnatural. Daniel walked into the kitchen, picked up his phone, and dialed a number he hadn't called in years. His older brother, Marcus, lived two states away in Ohio. Marcus had warned Daniel two years ago that Melissa had a volatile, manipulative temper, but Daniel had dismissed it as sibling rivalry.

"Daniel?" Marcus’s voice sounded groggy on the second ring. "It’s late. Is everything okay?"

"I kicked Melissa out tonight," Daniel said, his voice trembling despite his best efforts.

A long silence hung over the line. "What did she do?" Marcus asked soberly.

May you like

"She’s been abusing the kids," Daniel said, the words taste like ash in his mouth. "Ethan stood between her and Lily today. He protected his sister from her."

Marcus swore under his breath. "I’m getting in my truck. I’ll be there by morning."
