Chapter 6 - The Arraignment

The Westchester County Courthouse was swarming with reporters, news vans, and flashing cameras.
When the black transport van arrived from the county jail, Ethan Vance was led out in handcuffs and orange prison scrubs. The golden boy who had once worn three-thousand-dollar suits now shuffled forward with his head down, desperately trying to hide his face from the blinding camera flashes.
Inside Courtroom 302, the tension was suffocating.
Evelyn Vance sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in mourning black, her hands shaking as she clutched a gold rosary. Beside her, Karen Vance was surrounded by three high-priced defense attorneys, her face covered in heavy makeup to hide the dark circles under her eyes.
I walked into the courtroom through the side entrance, dressed in a sharp navy blazer, holding my head high. I didn’t sit in the gallery. I took my seat at the prosecutor’s table as the complaining witness and legal guardian of the victim.
The double doors at the back opened, and Judge Arthur Miller took the bench. Miller was a seventy-year-old veteran jurist with a reputation for mercilessly shredding arrogant lawyers.
“Gavel down,” the bailiff announced. “State of New York versus Ethan Vance and Karen Vance. Arraignment and bail hearing.”
Richard Sterling stood up immediately. “Your Honor, my clients move for an immediate dismissal of all charges. This entire proceeding is a politically motivated witch hunt orchestrated by Judge Elena Vance, who has abused her federal authority to settle a petty domestic dispute!”
Judge Miller slowly lowered his reading glasses and stared at Sterling. “Mr. Sterling, if you utter another contemptuous remark about this court or the complaining witness without evidentiary backing, I will fine you ten thousand dollars and hold you in the county jail for the weekend. Sit down.”
Sterling swallowed hard and sat down.
“Mr. District Attorney,” Judge Miller said, turning to Marcus Young. “Present the state’s evidence on bail.”
Marcus stepped to the podium and inserted a flash drive into the courtroom console. “Your Honor, the state presents Exhibit A: unedited 4K security footage recovered under a federal preservation warrant from the defendant Evelyn Vance’s residence.”
The massive courtroom monitors flickered to life.
The video was crystal clear. The high-definition audio filled the silent courtroom.
The entire gallery gasped as Lily’s voice rang out: *“Ethan, look! I memorized all thirty articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights!”*
Then came Ethan’s vicious sneer: *“Do you actually think that pathetic little grade puts you on my level? Get out of here, you insignificant brat!”*
The shove. The sickening, resonant *CRACK* of Lily’s bone breaking. Lily’s blood-curdling scream.
And then, Karen Vance walking over and driving her three-inch stiletto directly into the shattered bone while hissing: *“Stop playing the victim!”*
Several members of the jury pool who were sitting in the back covered their mouths in horror. One of the court stenographers flinched.
Even the defense lawyers turned their heads away from the screen, unable to stomach the sheer barbarity displayed in vivid color.
Karen buried her face in her hands, trembling. Ethan slumped onto the defense table, letting out a pathetic whimper.
“Turn it off,” Judge Miller ordered, his face dark with fury. He glared at Ethan, then at Karen. “I have sat on this bench for thirty-two years, and I have rarely witnessed an act of such cowardly, sadistic violence against a defenseless child.”
Marcus Young pressed forward. “Your Honor, in addition to the violent assault charges, the state has added three counts of witness tampering and bribery against Karen Vance, after she attempted to bribe a witness with twenty thousand dollars to falsify testimony yesterday afternoon.”
“That is a lie!” Karen shrieked, jumping to her feet. “She’s lying! Elena fabricated the video! She hacked the cameras!”
“Silence!” Judge Miller slammed his gavel down with thunderous force. “Bailiff, restrain the defendant!”
Two armed deputies seized Karen by the arms, forcing her back into her chair.
“Regarding Ethan Vance,” Judge Miller declared, his voice cutting through the room like a razor. “Given the violent nature of the offenses, the overwhelming video evidence, and the substantial flight risk posed by his access to family trust funds, bail is denied. Defendant will be remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections pending trial.”
Ethan began to wail. “Grandma! Don't let them take me! Grandma, please!”
“Regarding Karen Vance,” Miller continued, his eyes icy. “Given the active witness tampering charges, bail is revoked immediately. You will join your son in county custody.”
“No! You can’t do this!” Karen screamed as the deputies pulled her arms behind her back, clicking the steel cuffs over her wrists. “Do you know who we are? We are the Vances! We built this town!”
“Take them away,” Judge Miller commanded.

As Karen and Ethan were dragged through the secure holding door, Evelyn Vance collapsed onto the gallery bench, clutching her heart, realizing for the first time that their dynasty had crumbled to dust.
