Chapter 8 - Plea Bargains and Betrayals

The visiting room at the Bedford Hills Women’s Correctional Facility was cold, sterile, and monitored by overhead cameras.
Karen Vance sat across from her new, court-appointed public defender, her designer nails bitten down to the quick, her dyed blonde hair showing two inches of gray roots.
“What do you mean Ethan signed a plea deal?!” Karen screamed, slamming her palms onto the metal table. The nearby correction officer rested a hand on his taser, warning her with a sharp glare.
The public defender, an exhausted woman named Clara Morales, sighed and pushed a document across the partition.
“Ethan took a deal twenty minutes ago, Karen. The District Attorney offered him seven years in state prison with eligibility for parole in five, in exchange for his full, unreserved testimony against you.”
Karen’s breath caught in her throat. “Testimony… against me? I’m his mother! I sacrificed everything for him! I went into debt to keep his name clean!”
“In his sworn allocution,” Clara continued coldly, “Ethan testified that you were the one who orchestrated the cover-up. He stated that you kicked Lily on purpose out of spite, that you ordered him to lie about the stairs, and that you paid off the catering server using trust funds. He signed the confession to avoid a ten-year mandatory minimum for first-degree assault.”
Karen stared at the document. Her golden boy—the boy she had spoiled, protected, and elevated above all human decency—had traded her freedom for two fewer years behind bars without batting an eye.
“That ungrateful… treacherous little snake!” Karen shrieked, her voice cracking with pure hysterical rage. “I made him! I gave him everything! He was the one who shoved Lily! He broke her leg! Not me!”
“The state has video evidence of your shoe striking the fracture, Karen,” Clara said plainly. “Without Ethan’s cooperation, your defense is nonexistent. If you go to trial next week, Marcus Young will introduce Ethan’s testimony, the Arlo video, the forensic medical reports, and the witness tampering evidence. The jury will convict you in less than an hour.”
“What are my options?” Karen sobbed, clutching her face as reality crushed her chest.
“The DA is offering you a deal,” Clara said. “Eight years at Bedford Hills for aggravated child abuse and witness tampering, plus five years of probation and complete forfeiture of any claim to the Vance estate. If you refuse, Marcus Young goes to trial seeking the maximum: twenty-two years.”
Karen closed her eyes. Her entire life—the country clubs, the charity galas, the private jets, the arrogant social superiority—flashed before her eyes like a cruel joke. It was gone. All of it.
Trembling, she picked up the cheap plastic pen.

“Where do I sign?” she whispered through broken sobs.
