Chapter 8 - Cleaning House(Word Count: ~1,800 words)

Over the next two weeks, the city of Chicago experienced a massive seismic shift in its underground hierarchy, but without a single drop of blood spilled on the public streets.

With Lorenzo stripped of his influence and handed over to the Rossi family enforcers to settle his past debts, the remaining factions aligned under Julian’s old network collapsed like a house of cards. Dominic and his team conducted a surgical cleanup of our logistics, legal teams, and security details.

Every corrupt guard was replaced. Every compromised account was closed and re-routed.

To the public eye, Dante Moretti was simply restructuring his vast real estate and maritime shipping conglomerate. To the underworld, it was a clear demonstration that the Moretti empire was stronger, tighter, and more ruthless than ever.

On a sunny Friday afternoon, I sat in my study reviewing the new corporate filings.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

“Come in,” I called out.

The door opened, and Eleanor—Alina’s mother—stepped into the room. She was holding a small leatherbound photo album.

I immediately stood up from my desk. “Eleanor. Please, sit.”

She walked in, looking around the study with a gentle, cautious smile. Three weeks ago, she had been terrified of me, believing I was the ruthless don who would destroy her daughter if the truth ever came out. Today, she looked at me with deep respect.

“I brought something for you, Dante,” Eleanor said, setting the photo album on my desk.

I opened the cover. Inside were old, faded photographs of Alina as a young girl—playing in her family’s garden, wearing a white dress at her high school graduation, laughing with her younger brother on a beach in Florida.

“After Alina’s father fell into debt with the syndicates, she stopped smiling like that,” Eleanor said softly, her eyes filling with memories. “For years, I watched my daughter carry the burden of our family’s mistakes on her small shoulders. When she married you, I thought her life was effectively over.”

I looked down at the photograph of Alina laughing on the beach, my heart aching with the realization of how much she had suffered before coming into my life.

“I spoke to her on the phone this morning,” Eleanor continued, laying her hand over mine on the desk. “She sounded happier than I have heard her in ten years, Dante. She told me how you handled Lorenzo. She told me how you protect her.”

“I will spend the rest of my life protecting her, Eleanor,” I promised sincerely. “She is the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Eleanor smiled, wiping a stray tear from her eye. “I know she is. And I’m sorry for keeping that secret from you for three years. I was afraid.”

“You were protecting your daughter,” I said smoothly. “I can never fault a parent for that.”

Just then, the study door swung open, and Alina walked in carrying a silver tray with two steaming cups of Earl Grey tea and fresh lemon slices.

She was wearing a simple yellow summer dress that radiated warmth, her hair tied back casually.

“Mom! I didn't know you arrived already,” Alina said, setting the tray on my desk and giving her mother a warm hug.

“I was just sharing some old memories with your husband,” Eleanor beamed, pointing at the photo album.

Alina blushed, looking down at the opened album. “Oh, Mom! Not those embarrassing childhood photos!”

I wrapped my arm around Alina’s waist, pulling her close to my side, and looked down at her with an affectionate smirk. “I think they’re beautiful. In fact, I’m keeping this album right here on my desk.”

Alina laughed, resting her head against my shoulder. “You’re terrible, Dante.”

“I’m the Boss, my love,” I murmured, kissing her cheek. “I get to keep whatever I want.”
