Chapter 5 - The Dawn of ReckoningThe sun rose over Zapopan the next morning in a blaze of crisp, clear autumn light.

By 8:45 AM, the towering glass-and-steel skyscraper housing Varden Holdings was buzzing with activity. Luxury sedans pulled up to the circular driveway in a continuous stream as board members, investors, and high-society journalists arrived for the emergency shareholder meeting.

Inside the executive boardroom on the thirty-fifth floor, Eduardo Varden stood at the head of the polished walnut table, wearing an expensive charcoal suit and an expression of supreme, unshakeable confidence. Beside him sat Clara, still reeling from the disaster of the canceled wedding yesterday, nervously dabbing her nose with a silk handkerchief.

And at the center of the table sat Adrián.

He looked exhausted, his hair unstyled, dark circles under his eyes. He had spent the entire night calling my phone, leaving a toxic mix of furious voicemails and desperate pleas. “Lucía, stop acting crazy. Let’s just elope. Don’t ruin my career over a haircut.”

He still didn't understand. He genuinely believed that my life, my mother’s dignity, and my self-respect were minor inconveniences he could negotiate away with a check.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Eduardo announced, tapping his gold fountain pen against the microphone. “Thank you for attending this extraordinary session. Today is a monumental day for Varden Holdings. Not only are we celebrating the consolidation of our new municipal development contracts, but I am officially stepping down as CEO to hand the reins over to my son, Adrián Varden.”

Polite, sycophantic applause rippled around the table. Adrián offered a tight, forced smile, standing up to take a bow.

“Before we take the formal vote,” Eduardo continued, raising a hand, “I want to acknowledge that minor domestic hiccups—such as yesterday’s unfortunate wedding drama—do not define our family’s stability. My son is a visionary leader ready to take this company into a golden age.”

The heavy mahogany double doors at the back of the boardroom clicked open.

The chatter in the room instantly died.

The doors swung wide, pushed open with deliberate, echoing force.

Marcus Vance, head of Larkmore corporate security, stepped inside first, holding open the door.

Then, rolling smoothly in her motorized wheelchair, Rowena Varden entered the room.

Eduardo’s face drained of color so fast he looked like a corpse. His jaw dropped, his gold pen slipping from his fingers and clattering loudly against the walnut table.

“R-Rowena...?” Eduardo stammered, gripping the edge of the podium. “How... how are you out of the estate? This is a private corporate meeting! Security, remove her!”

“Sit down, Eduardo,” Rowena’s voice echoed across the room, carrying the terrifying, absolute weight of an absolute monarch.

And right behind her, walking with her head held high, wearing a sharp charcoal blazer over a silk blouse, with my grandfather’s antique sapphire choker sparkling around my neck, walked me.

Adrián froze mid-stride, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated horror.

“Lucía...?” Adrián whispered, choking on his own breath. “What are you doing here? Have you lost your mind?”

I didn't look at him. I walked straight past the rows of stunned board members, stopping right beside Rowena at the head of the table.

“Good morning, everyone,” I said, my voice ringing out clear and steady. “I believe there’s an agenda item regarding the rightful ownership of Varden Holdings that you forgot to review.”
