Chapter 9 - The Final VerdictThe federal courtroom on the fourth floor of the Zapopan judicial complex was packed to capacity.

The air inside was thick with tension, buzzing with the low murmur of journalists, legal aides, and curious onlookers who had crowded in to witness the final chapter of the Varden trial. For months, the local and national media had tracked every twist and turn of the scandal: the dramatic corporate restructuring, the exposure of decades-old financial fraud, and the spectacular downfall of Eduardo Varden.
Sitting at the defense table, Eduardo looked a decade older. His expensive charcoal suit was replaced by an orange detention jumpsuit, his shoulders permanently slouched under the weight of incontrovertible evidence. Beside him, Adrián sat staring blankly at the polished wooden table, the arrogant glow of high society entirely stripped away, leaving only the hollow shell of a man who had chosen vanity over reality.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, resting my hand gently over my seven-month-rounded belly. Beside me sat Mom, wearing her silver-streaked hair in a soft, proud braid, her expression calm and unshakeable. Rowena Varden sat on my other side, her hands resting calmly on the silver handle of her cane, watching the judges’ bench with a look of cold, unrelenting justice.
The heavy oak doors at the front of the courtroom swung open.
“All rise for the Honorable Judge Martínez,” the bailiff announced sharply.
We all stood as a panel of three judges entered, taking their seats behind the high mahogany bench.
The trial had been swift and devastating for the defense. Despite Adrián’s desperate claims of ignorance and Eduardo’s frantic attempts to shift blame, the digital audit trails, offshore bank transfers, and forged land trust deeds presented by the federal prosecutors left zero room for doubt. The Varden empire had been built on a foundation of sand, and the tide had finally washed it all away.
Judge Elena Morales cleared her throat, adjusting her spectacles as she opened the thick sentencing dossier.
“In the matter of the State versus Eduardo Varden and Adrián Varden,” the judge began, her voice echoing clearly through the silent courtroom. “The court has reviewed all testimonies, financial audits, and documented evidence concerning the systematic embezzlement, securities fraud, and fraudulent seizure of the Martínez Family Trust assets.”
Eduardo closed his eyes, gripping the edges of the defense table until his knuckles turned white.
“For the charges of grand larceny, corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice,” Judge Morales continued, “Eduardo Varden is sentenced to twelve years in federal prison, with no possibility of parole for the first eight, alongside full restitution of all misappropriated funds.”
A collective intake of breath rippled through the gallery.
The judge then turned her gaze toward Adrián.
“Adrián Varden, while the court acknowledges your secondary role in the corporate shell companies, evidence proves you directly benefited from and actively concealed the illicit funds to maintain an elite lifestyle while obstructing federal oversight. For conspiracy to commit fraud and laundering of stolen assets, you are sentenced to five years in federal prison.”
Adrián let out a sharp, choked gasp, his head snapping up. He looked directly across the courtroom, his eyes locking onto mine with a desperate, pleading expression. He parted his lips as if to call my name, to beg for a word, a nod, anything.
I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I simply looked back at him with absolute, unbroken calm.
He had chosen Camila’s approval over my mother’s dignity. He had chosen wealth and silence over truth and human decency. Now, he was reaping the exact harvest he had sown.

“Court is adjourned,” Judge Morales declared, striking her gavel with a sharp, final crack.
The bailiffs moved in immediately, clicking handcuffs onto Eduardo and Adrián and leading them away through the side doors. The fall of the house of Varden was officially complete.
