Chapter 7 - The Unbroken TruthBack at the Hale estate, the medical staff rushed to settle Eleanor back into her suite, checking her vitals and administering her evening medication to ensure the stress of the abduction hadn't triggered a crisis.

Bennett stood in the hallway outside her room, watching through the glass door as Clara gently smoothed down Eleanor’s bedsheets, whispering soothing words until his mother’s breathing slowed and she drifted off to a peaceful sleep.

When Clara finally stepped out into the hallway, closing the door softly behind her, she looked exhausted. Her hair was messy, the bruise on her cheek was turning a dark shade of purple, and her shoulders slumped with the weight of the terrifying night.

Bennett reached out, gently catching her arm before she could walk past him.

“Come with me,” he said quietly.

“Bennett, I need to check on the dispensary schedule—”

“The dispensary can wait,” he interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. “My office. Now.”

Clara sighed, following him down the familiar corridor to the third-floor executive office.

When they entered, Bennett didn't sit behind his massive desk. Instead, he walked over to the private bar built into the mahogany wall, poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a heavy crystal glass, and turned back to face her.

Clara stood near the center of the room, folding her hands in front of her. “Are you going to fire me now? Because of the danger? Because my past brought Viktor Sterling to your doorstep?”

Bennett took a slow sip of the bourbon, his eyes never leaving her face. He walked across the room until he was standing just inches away from her. The scent of rain and gunpowder still lingered on his coat.

“Your past didn't bring Sterling to my doorstep, Clara,” Bennett said softly. “My father’s past did. Your father was just another victim in a war my family started.”

Clara looked down, biting her lower lip. “When my father died... I spent years hating the name Hale. Every time I saw your face in the financial papers, smiling from the front page of the magazines, I wanted to burn everything you built to the ground.”

“And yet,” Bennett murmured, lifting a hand to gently touch the bruised skin on her cheek with the lightest, most reverent touch imaginable, “when you got inside this house, instead of destroying us... you saved my mother’s soul.”

Clara’s breath hitched. She looked up, her dark eyes swimming with unshed tears. “Because your mother wasn't the monster who ruined my family. She was just a prisoner in this house, same as me. Only she was dying, and no one cared.”

Bennett’s chest tightened. He closed the remaining distance between them, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her against his chest. Clara let out a shaky sigh, burying her face in his shoulder, her arms coming up to wrap tightly around his neck.

In that quiet, heavily guarded office, surrounded by the ghosts of a violent past and the dangerous reality of their present, Bennett realized something that terrified him far more than any syndicate war or hostile takeover.

He had fallen completely, irreversibly in love with the daughter of the man his family had destroyed.
