Chapter 8 - The Final AuditThree days later, the sun rose over the city, casting a warm, golden light across the harbor.

Inside the executive office, Bennett sat behind his desk with a thick leather-bound ledger open before him. It was the original financial record of the eastern shipping docks—the very book his father had stolen from Julian Reed twenty-five years ago.

Clara stood beside the desk, watching him quietly as he turned the yellowed pages covered in her father’s neat, meticulous handwriting.

“What are you going to do with it?” Clara asked softly.

Bennett looked up, sliding a freshly printed legal document across the mahogany surface toward her.

Clara picked it up, her eyes scanning the text. As she read the words, her hands began to tremble, and a sharp gasp escaped her lips.

“Bennett... what is this?” she whispered, looking up at him in sheer disbelief.

“It’s a complete corporate restructuring,” Bennett explained, his voice steady and resolute. “The eastern docks, the shipping terminals, and fifty percent of the Hale Holdings portfolio are no longer under my sole control.”

He pointed a finger at the signature line.

“According to the original partnership agreement your father drafted in 1998—which I found hidden in the back of this ledger—Julian Reed was an equal fifty-percent equity partner in everything my family built. My father buried that truth, but I am unearthing it.”

Clara stared at the document, tears streaming freely down her cheeks. “You’re... you’re giving half your empire back to my family? To me?”

“I’m not giving it back, Clara,” Bennett said, standing up and walking around the desk to stand directly in front of her. He took her hands in his, pressing the pen into her trembling fingers. “I’m restoring what was stolen. And more importantly... I want to build something new. Together.”

Clara looked from the legal document up into Bennett’s eyes, the fierce, unyielding pride of the Reed family shining through her tears.

“My father would have been proud of you,” she whispered.

“Your father would have hated me for taking this long,” Bennett replied with a faint, rare smile.

Clara laughed softly, lifting the pen and signing her name—Clara Reed-Hale—across the bottom of the foundational trust deed.
