Chapter 5 - The Basement Below the RiverThe air in the abandoned warehouse district near the old timber yards tasted of stagnant water and rotting wood.

Marin Hollis opened her eyes slowly, wincing as a sharp, pulsing pain hammered behind her temples. Her wrists were bound behind her back with heavy zip-ties, chafing against her raw skin every time she shifted her weight. She was seated on an old wooden chair in the center of a damp, concrete-floored room illuminated only by a flickering overhead fluorescent light.

Standing near the doorway, leaning casually against a rusted metal beam, was a man Marin recognized all too well from the high-society restaurant upstairs: Warren Pike.

Pike looked different without his tailored Italian suit. His shirt sleeves were rolled up, revealing thick, hairy forearms, and a jagged, nervous twitch pulled at the corner of his left eye.

"Well, well, well," Pike murmured, stepping out of the shadows and walking slowly toward her. "The little waitress who thought she could stand by and watch me get humiliated by Santoro's little temper tantrum."

Marin swallowed hard, her throat dry as sand. "I... I didn't say anything. I was just cleaning—"

"You were standing right there," Pike hissed, his face darkening with rage as he grabbed her by the hair and jerked her head back. "You watched Santoro make a fool of me over a drop of water! Because of you, my contracts are frozen, my reputation in the syndicate is in tatters, and Santoro thinks he owns the entire city!"

"I don't care about your contracts," Marin whispered, tears blurring her vision. "Please... just let me go."

"Let you go?" Pike laughed harshly, letting go of her hair and pacing around the chair. "Judge Vance gave me a little tip this morning. He wants to hurt Santoro the way Santoro hurt his daughter. And what better way to strike at the heart of the man who enforces the 'no harming the defenseless' rule than by taking the very person he publicly defended?"

Marin's heart hammered against her ribs. She didn't know anything about Santoro's rules, she didn't know why the terrifying mafia boss had stopped Evelyn from hitting her, but she knew one thing for certain: she was a pawn in a brutal game between powerful men who viewed human lives as chess pieces.

"He won't care about me," Marin managed to say through trembling lips. "He doesn't even know my name."

"Oh, he knows," Pike sneered, pulling out his phone and tapping the screen. "In fact, I'm about to send his most trusted dog a little video message to let him know exactly where to find you. And when Santoro walks through that door alone to save his precious little waitress... we'll see how invincible the great Rafael Santoro really is."
