Chapter 7 - The Reckoning at the West DocksThe fluorescent light overhead flickered, casting erratic shadows across the damp concrete floor. Warren Pike pressed the barrel of his revolver harder against Marin’s temple, his breathing ragged and erratic.

"Between you and me?" Pike shouted, spittle flying from his lips as his paranoia peaked. "You ruined my life! You humiliated me in front of the entire syndicate, you froze my contracts, and you let that judge push me into a corner! And all for her!"

Marin closed her eyes, bracing herself for the sound of the gunshot. She whispered a quiet prayer under her breath, regretting only that she would never be able to finish paying off the third envelope on her car seat.

Rafe didn't break eye contact with Pike. His voice remained as steady as a metronome. "You broke the rule, Warren. You laid your hands on someone who couldn't fight back—twice. First by conspiring with Vance to ruin innocent families, and second by abducting an employee from my building."

"Shut up!" Pike screamed, tightening his grip. "Say goodbye to your little waitress, Santoro—"

Before Pike could squeeze the trigger, a sharp, deafening crack echoed through the warehouse.

It wasn't a gunshot from Rafe.

From the shadows of the upper catwalk, a silenced bullet pierced directly through Warren Pike’s right wrist. The heavy revolver dropped from his shattered hand with a clatter against the concrete, and Pike shrieked in agony, clutching his bleeding arm as he collapsed to his knees.

Abel Ferraro stepped out from the metal staircase above, lowering his smoking rifle with professional detachment. "I told you we should bring backup, boss," Abel called down dryly. "I just didn't say whose backup."

Before Pike could scream again, Rafe crossed the distance between them in three long strides. He grabbed Pike by the collar of his shirt, hauled him up to his feet with terrifying strength, and drove his fist directly into Pike's jaw.

Pike crumpled unconscious to the floor like a sack of wet cement.

Rafe didn't look back at him. He immediately knelt beside Marin, pulling a small pocketknife from his coat and slicing through the plastic zip-ties binding her wrists.

Marin rubbed her raw, bleeding wrists, looking up at the terrifying mafia boss with wide, disbelieving eyes. Her lip was split, and her cheek bore the faint purple stain of Evelyn’s earlier assault.

"Can you stand?" Rafe asked, his voice softening just a fraction as he offered her his hand.

Marin nodded slowly, taking his strong, calloused hand and letting him pull her up to her feet. Her legs wobbled, and she nearly collapsed, but Rafe caught her by the waist, steadying her against his shoulder.

"Abel," Rafe called out without turning around. "Call an ambulance for Pike. And make sure Judge Vance receives a very special package delivered to his chambers tomorrow morning containing copies of Pike's full confession."

"Consider it done," Abel replied, already dialing on his encrypted phone.
