Chapter 1 - The Ash on Fifth AvenueThe rainfall felt heavier the moment Coraline’s designer heels clicked away into the misty crowd. Five hundred elite guests inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral were currently staring at an empty altar, but I didn't care if the entire Manhattan upper crust burned to the ground.

I looked back at Mave. She was shivering, clutching Posie so tightly that her knuckles were white. The little girl’s pale gray eyes shifted between me and her mother, filled with a quiet, heartbreaking caution that no two-year-old should ever possess.
"Garrett, please," Mave whispered, her voice trembling above the hum of idling taxicabs. "You shouldn't have done that. Your family... your mother... you don't know what she's capable of."
"I know my mother is a monster," I said, stepping closer to block the freezing wind from hitting them both. "What I don't know is what she did to you three years ago. Or why Coraline Ashford just looked at you like she already knew your name."
Mave tucked Posie closer under her damp coat. "This isn't a street conversation. And we are not safe out in the open."
I didn't hesitate. I pulled my cell phone from my tuxedo pocket and dialed my personal security officer, Wesley, who was still standing by the idling Rolls-Royce with a look of absolute panic on his face.
"Wesley," I commanded, my voice cold as ice. "Tell the media the wedding is canceled due to a private matter. Secure the penthouse in Tribeca. Nobody gets in—not my mother, not the Ashfords, nobody. Bring the SUV around right now."
Within two minutes, we were in the back of a tinted black Suburban, cutting through the rainy heart of New York City. The silence inside the vehicle was heavy, charged with three years of unsaid words, grief, and betrayal. Posie sat in Mave’s lap, her small fingers clutching Mave’s faded collar.
"Posie," I said quietly, testing the name on my tongue. "Is short for Marigold?"
Mave looked at me, a flicker of surprise in her dark eyes before she closed them tight, fighting back tears. "Posy. Like the flower. You... you used to bring me sweet peas and yellow posies from the florist on 4th Street when we were broke in college."
A sharp pain twisted in my chest. She remembered. Despite everything, she remembered the small, human life we had built together before my mother, Victoria Hail, ripped my world apart and forced me back into the corporate fold of Hail Enterprises.
"Tell me, Mave," I demanded softly, resting my forearms on my knees as I leaned toward her. "Three years ago, you walked out of our apartment. You left your wedding ring on the kitchen counter. You didn't leave a note. My mother told me you took a check for five million dollars and flew to Paris."
Mave let out a bitter, choked laugh that contained zero humor. "Five million dollars? Garrett, I left New York with two hundred dollars in my checking account and a bruised rib."
My blood ran cold. "What did you say?"
"Your mother didn't offer me money," Mave whispered, looking directly into my eyes for the first time since I broke off my wedding. "She came to our apartment with two men in suits while you were in London negotiating the Ashford deal. She threw a folder on the table. Photos of my younger brother in his dorm room. A list of every medical license my father held. She told me if I didn't disappear—if I didn't let you believe I abandoned you for money—she would destroy my family's lives within twenty-four hours."
"Why didn't you call me?" I growled, fists clenching until my knuckles cracked. "I would have protected you!"
"How?" Mave asked, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "You were twenty-six. She controlled your trust fund, your stock options, your entire name! And when I tried to say no... one of her men grabbed me. They made it very clear that accidents happen to people who disobey Victoria Hail."
She swallowed hard, taking a ragged breath as she stroked Posie’s soft brown hair.
"Two weeks after I fled to a small town in upstate New York, I found out I was pregnant," Mave continued. "I tried to come back once, Garrett. I took a bus into the city when I was four months pregnant. I went to your office building. And do you know who I saw coming out of the lobby with your mother?"
May you like
I held my breath.
"Coraline Ashford," Mave said, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "And your mother was handing her a thick yellow file labeled with my name."
