Chapter 2 - The Shattered IvoryThe silence inside the Suburban was so suffocating that the only sound was the steady rhythm of rain beating against the bulletproof glass. The realization settled in my gut like lead: Coraline Ashford hadn't just been a convenient political match orchestrated by my mother after Mave left. Coraline had been part of the play from the very beginning.

"Wesley, drive faster," I ordered, my voice dangerously low.

"Sir, your mother has already called my private line seven times," Wesley reported from the driver's seat, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror. "And Mr. Ashford’s security detail is currently outside St. Patrick's threatening to release a press statement claiming you've had a psychotic break."

"Let them claim whatever they want," I barked. "If anyone tries to block the entrance to the Tribeca building, run them over."

When we arrived at my private penthouse—a property my mother didn't control because I had purchased it under a blind LLC during my second year at Wharton—I escorted Mave and Posie inside. The floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the gray Manhattan skyline. It was a palace of glass and steel, but right now, it felt like a bunker.

Mave stood awkwardly near the Italian leather sofa, holding Posie close as if she expected armed guards to burst through the door at any moment. Posie looked around with wide, curious gray eyes, resting her little chin on Mave's shoulder.

"She needs dry clothes," I said, softening my voice as I looked at the toddler. "And so do you. I'll have my housekeeper bring up supplies. There's a guest suite down the hall."

"Garrett," Mave said, stepping back slightly as I took off my wet tuxedo jacket and tossed it onto a chair. "You don't understand what you've done today. The Hail-Ashford merger was supposed to solidify a three-billion-dollar energy deal. Victoria will destroy you for walking away from that altar."

"Let her try," I said, taking a step toward her. "For three years, I thought you threw our love away for money. I lived in a frozen hell, letting my mother direct my life because I thought nothing mattered anymore. I let her draft Coraline into my life because I didn't care who I married if it wasn't you."

I stopped inches from Mave, looking down at her worn face, the dark circles under her eyes, and the sheer fatigue etched into her delicate features.

"She lied to me, Mave. She tore my soul out and built an empire on the pieces. But seeing you today... seeing her..." I gently reached out, my fingers barely brushing against Posie’s tiny hand. The child didn't pull away; instead, her tiny fingers wrapped around my pinky finger with a surprising grip. A sudden, violent rush of fierce, protective warmth flooded my chest. "...changes everything."

"She's yours, Garrett," Mave whispered, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "Posie is your daughter. I named her Marigold Posy Hail in my heart, even if her birth certificate only says Whitlock."

Before I could answer, my primary phone—the one restricted only to top-tier executives and family—began to ring. The caller ID read: VICTORIA HAIL.

I answered on speakerphone, keeping my eyes fixed on Mave.

"Garrett," my mother's voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room. It was smooth, articulate, and completely devoid of warmth—the voice of a woman who had spent forty years running a global conglomerate with an iron fist. "You have exactly twenty minutes to return to the reception at the Plaza Hotel, apologize to the Ashford family, and announce that the wedding was temporarily delayed due to a security scare. Otherwise, I will execute the board’s protocol to remove you as Chief Executive Officer of Hail Enterprises before the markets open on Monday."

I smiled bitterly into the receiver. "Hello, Mother."

"Don't 'Mother' me, Garrett," she snapped, a hairline crack appearing in her stoic composure. "You made a pathetic scene on Fifth Avenue over a ghost. I warned that girl three years ago what would happen if she ever crossed your path again. If you think a bastard child is going to derail this family's legacy, you are severely mistaken."

"You touched her," I said, my voice dropping an octave into a register that made even Wesley straighten up by the doorway. "You threatened her family. You had your thugs lay a hand on her."

"I did what was necessary to protect this family from a penniless gold-digger!" Victoria sneered. "She was a distraction from your destiny! Coraline Ashford brings half of the Eastern seaboard's shipping routes to our portfolio. What does Mave Whitlock bring? A child born in the dirt?"

"She brings my daughter," I said, every word dripping with lethal calm. "And as of this second, Mother, you no longer have a son. You have an enemy."

"Garrett, don't be stupid—"

I hung up the phone and threw it against the marble wall, watching it shatter into a hundred pieces.

Posie flinched at the loud noise, hiding her face in Mave’s neck. I immediately dropped to one knee, swallowing the rage that threatened to consume me.

"I'm sorry, little one," I murmured, keeping my voice as gentle as possible. "I promise you, no one is ever going to scare you again."

Mave looked down at me, her eyes wide with shock. "Garrett... what are you going to do? She controls the board. She controls ninety percent of your wealth."

"She controls Hail Enterprises," I corrected, standing up and buttoning my shirt sleeves. "She doesn't control me. For three years, I’ve been quietly building my own network outside of her reach. But if Coraline Ashford knew about you three years ago, then this wasn't just my mother's doing. The Ashfords are hiding something far bigger."

I turned to Wesley. "Get Julian on the line. Tell him I need a full forensic audit of the Ashford Maritime accounts by midnight. And get a private medical team here immediately for a discreet DNA test."

Mave frowned, a look of hurt crossing her face. "You don't believe me?"

"I believe you with my whole heart, Mave," I said, reaching out to gently touch her jawline. "The DNA test isn't for me. It's for the court. Because when my mother comes for us, I am going to use the law, my money, and every ounce of power I possess to strip her of everything she owns—including the Hail name."

An hour later, a private physician took the swab samples from Posie and me. The little girl was remarkably brave, sucking on a lollipop the doctor gave her while staring up at me with those unmistakable gray eyes.

While Mave took Posie to the bedroom to put her down for a nap, my head of private intelligence, Julian, arrived at the penthouse carrying an encrypted laptop. Julian was a former CIA analyst who owed me his life after I helped his family escape a political disaster in Eastern Europe five years ago.

"You stirred up a hornet's nest, Garrett," Julian said without preamble, opening his laptop on the kitchen island. "The stock for Hail Enterprises is already down four percent in after-hours trading due to rumors of the canceled wedding. But that's not the worst part."

"What did you find on the Ashfords?" I asked, pouring two glasses of scotch.

Julian pulled up a set of heavily encrypted bank transfers and shipping manifests. "You were right to be suspicious. Three years ago, right around the time Mave disappeared, Ashford Maritime was on the brink of bankruptcy. Their container ships were being seized in European ports due to massive illegal debt."

"And how did they survive?"

"A shell company registered in the Cayman Islands injected two hundred million dollars into Ashford Maritime," Julian explained, turning the screen toward me. "Look at the signature on the wire transfer authorization."

I leaned in. The signature was unmistakable. It was my mother's personal secretary, acting on behalf of a trust set up under my late father’s estate.

"Victoria didn't just pay off Mave's family threats," I realized, the pieces finally assembling in my head. "She bought the Ashford family. She paid two hundred million dollars to save their company, on the condition that Coraline marry me three years later."

"It gets dirtier," Julian said grimly. "Why would your mother pay two hundred million dollars to save a failing company just to get you a wife? Unless Ashford Maritime possessed something Victoria desperately needed."

"The port rights," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "The deep-water port in Maine. My father wanted that port twenty years ago, but the federal government blocked the purchase due to environmental regulations."

"Exactly," Julian nodded. "If Hail Enterprises merged with Ashford Maritime, those federal restrictions automatically dissolved due to a grandfather clause in the maritime charter. Victoria wasn't just arranging a marriage, Garrett. She was orchestrating a multi-billion-dollar corporate heist. And Mave was collateral damage because she was the only person who could keep you from staying focused on the corporate throne."

Suddenly, the front door’s electronic lock chimed.

Wesley instantly drew his sidearm, moving toward the hallway. But before he could reach the foyer, the heavy oak doors swung open.

Standing in the doorway was not a team of my mother’s lawyers or security guards.

It was Coraline Ashford, dressed in a sleek black trench coat, her hair damp from the rain, holding a thick leather briefcase in her hand.

"Put the gun away, Wesley," Coraline said calmly, stepping inside and letting the door click shut behind her. "I'm not here to fight you, Garrett. In fact, I'm here to give you the weapon you need to destroy your mother."
