Chapter 5 - The Architect of Spite

The confession hit Rachel like a physical blow. The world seemed to tilt on its axis.

"You?" Rachel backed away, her hands rising instinctively to protect her bandaged face. "You put the staples in the cake? *Why?* I never did anything to you! I lent you money for your boutique! I helped you with your mother’s funeral expenses!"

"Not for you!" Melissa screamed, clutching her head in her hands, her fingers tangling in her disheveled blonde hair. "It wasn't for you, Rachel! It was never meant for you!"

Rachel stared at her, uncomprehending. "What are you talking about?"

Melissa raised her head. In the amber light of the foyer, the terror in her eyes had curdled into something raw, twisted, and profoundly broken.

"Evan has been beating me for two years," Melissa said, her voice dropping to a harsh, ragged whisper.

She pulled down the collar of her oversized sweater.

Rachel gasped. Across Melissa’s collarbone and down her chest were overlapping layers of yellowish-purple contusions, and on her shoulder, the faint, sickening outline of a circular burn mark.

"He took out the three-hundred-thousand-dollar loan in my name," Melissa wept. "He forged my signature. The collectors weren't calling him; they were calling me. They threatened to take my parents' house, which I co-signed on. He told me that if I went to the police, he’d tell everyone I was embezzling from the trust through my boutique. He said he’d ruin me."

"Melissa..." Rachel reached out, but Melissa shrank away.

"Last week, I overheard him on the phone with his bookie," Melissa continued, tears streaming freely down her hollow cheeks. "He said, *'Don't worry about the payment. My sister is coming to my birthday party. An accident is going to happen, and by next week, the trust dissolves.'* He was planning to poison you, Rachel. He had rat poison—strychnine—hidden in the garage workbench."

The coldness in Rachel’s veins turned to pure ice. "He was going to poison me at his party?"

"Yes!" Melissa sobbed. "He bought the red velvet cake because the cocoa powder covers the chemical taste of strychnine! He told me to serve you the corner slice with the extra frosting. He threatened to break my jaw if I didn't hand the plate directly to you."

Rachel’s mind raced through the memories of Saturday morning. "The red velvet cake was destroyed. The police found it in the trash."

"Because I destroyed it!" Melissa cried out. "Saturday morning, while Evan was in the shower getting ready, I took the red velvet cake out to the garage and threw it into the disposal. I couldn't let him murder you, Rachel! I couldn't be an accomplice to murder!"

"Then where did the vanilla cake come from?" Rachel demanded, her voice rising in panic. "And why were there staples in it?!"

Melissa swallowed hard, her chest heaving.

"Evan always does the same thing on his birthday," Melissa said, her eyes vacant, staring through the floorboards. "Every single year since we got married. When I bring out his birthday cake, he blows out the candles, grabs the cake, and smashes it into my face. Every. Single. Year. He calls it our tradition. He thinks it’s hilarious to humiliate me in front of all his friends."

Rachel felt her breath catch in her throat. She remembered the party two years ago. Melissa covered in chocolate icing, laughing while her eyes were completely dead.

"He does it to break me," Melissa whispered, her voice trembling with venomous hatred. "He does it to show everyone in that room that I am his toy. His property. So on Friday night, while he was asleep, I baked a vanilla chiffon cake. I went into his garage. I took his staple gun. I clipped forty industrial staples into hooks. And I folded them into the frosting on the top layer."

Melissa looked up at Rachel, her gaze piercing, desperate, and utterly shattered.

"It was meant for Evan. When I brought the cake out, I was going to let him smash his own face into it. I wanted him to hurt. I wanted him to bleed like he made me bleed. I wanted him to go to the hospital so I could pack my bags and run before he came home."

Melissa reached out, her fingers trembling as she pointed at Rachel’s bandaged cheek.

"I didn't know he was going to grab the cake from the island and smash it into *you*."
