Chapter 7 - The Cornered Predator

"Evan, put the gun down!" Rachel yelled, raising her hands, every instinct screaming at her to dive behind the kitchen island.
The weight of the situation crashed over her. Evan wasn't just broke; he was completely unhinged. The financial walls were closing in, the loan sharks were at his throat, and now his own domestic abuse and attempted fratricide had unraveled into a chaotic bloodbath.
"Do you know what happens to guys like me in state prison, Rachel?" Evan sneered, his gun hand perfectly steady, pointed directly at Melissa’s chest. "They eat guys like me alive. And for what? Because my bitch wife couldn't take a joke? Because my saintly older sister wouldn't give me the money that Dad stole from me?"
"Dad didn't steal from you, Evan!" Rachel shouted, trying to draw his focus away from Melissa, who had curled into a fetal position on the floor. "Dad knew you were sick! He knew you destroyed everything you touched!"
"Dad was a coward!" Evan barked, swinging the muzzle toward Rachel.
The black bore of the barrel looked impossibly huge. Rachel stared down the barrel of the gun, her bandaged cheek burning as if the staples were tearing through her flesh all over again.
"If both of you die here," Evan murmured, his mind visibly calculating the sick mathematics of his escape, "it’s a home invasion. Or better yet: Melissa went crazy, attacked you with a knife over family drama, and I was forced to shoot her in self-defense. Then the trust passes to me. The loan sharks get paid. And I walk away clean."
"The police are forty yards away, Evan," Rachel said, keeping her voice as steady as her hammering heart allowed. "You fire one shot, and they will breach that door in ten seconds. You won't make it to the driveway."
"They’re sitting in their car eating donuts," Evan spat, cocking the hammer of the pistol with an oily, definitive *click*. "By the time they kick that door in, it’ll be over."
"Evan, please!" Melissa wailed from the floor. "Take the money! Take the house! Just don't do this!"
"Shut up!" Evan screamed, swinging his arm toward Melissa to strike her with the pistol.
In that split second of distraction, Rachel didn't think. The months of suppressed anger, the years of tolerating his petty cruelties, and the agonizing throb of forty-two stitches in her face culminated into a single, explosive impulse.
Rachel grabbed the heavy ceramic stand mixer sitting on the edge of the kitchen island. With all the strength in her torso, she hoisted the twenty-pound appliance and hurled it straight at Evan’s head.
The mixer struck Evan squarely in the shoulder and neck.
*BANG.*
The gun discharged, sending a 9mm round tearing through the drywall, shattering a framed family portrait in the hallway into a cloud of plaster dust and glass.
Evan stumbled backward, cursing wildly, dropping the pistol onto the polished hardwood.
"Melissa, run!" Rachel screamed, lunging across the counter to kick the gun away.
Her foot connected with the pistol, sending it sliding across the slick wood floor, directly under the living room sofa.
Evan roared in animalistic rage. He grabbed Rachel by her white blouse, his fingers twisting into the fabric, and slammed her against the refrigerator. The impact rattled the magnets and sent jars crashing to the floor. Rachel cried out as the sharp corner of a shelf struck her injured cheek, tearing through two of the surgical stitches. Blood instantly began to seep through the white gauze, warm and sticky.
"You ruined my life!" Evan snarled, his face inches from hers, spitting bourbon and bile. His hands clamped around her throat, cutting off her oxygen. "You always thought you were better than me!"
Rachel clawed at his wrists, her vision darkening at the edges, white spots dancing across her eyes. She couldn't breathe. The copper taste was back in her mouth.
Suddenly, a metallic shriek echoed through the kitchen.
Melissa had risen from the floor. In her trembling hands, she held the long, heavy stainless-steel rolling pin from the baking rack.

With a primal scream that sounded torn from the depths of her soul, Melissa brought the solid steel pin down across the back of Evan’s skull.
