Chapter 4 - Paper Trail of TreasonLosing the Apex Global pitch broke Corbin’s public image, but I knew that exposing his affair was only the tip of the iceberg. A man who felt so entitled to my home and assets wouldn't stop at personal betrayal. I knew there had to be deeper corruption hidden within his agency's books.

That afternoon, I met with my lead forensic accountant, Marcus, in my private office at Vance Chemical. We spent four hours siphoning through corporate tax filings, bank ledgers, and property records linked to Pinnacle Consulting.

"Nora, you need to look at this," Marcus said, sliding a thick manila folder across my desk.

I opened the folder, examining a series of wire transfers executed over the past eighteen months. Millions of dollars had been funneled out of Pinnacle Consulting's operational accounts into a shell company registered in Nevada under the name "Sunburst Ventures."

"Who owns Sunburst Ventures?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.

"It gets interesting," Marcus replied, clicking his laptop. "The registered manager is Brielle Miller. But the secondary signatory, holding full power of attorney, is Corbin Vance."

I leaned back in my leather executive chair, letting out a slow, cold breath. "He wasn't just cheating on me with her. He was embezzling funds from his own firm—funds that were backed by my personal guarantees—to build a secret nest egg with his mistress."

"Worse," Marcus added. "They used Sunburst Ventures to take out a second mortgage on your residential property. Corbin forged your digital signature on a power-of-attorney release form six months ago."

A cold, sharp rage settled deep in my chest. Corbin hadn't just used my pool; he had attempted to steal the very land beneath my feet. He had forged my name to finance his affair and set up a safety net for when his business inevitably failed.

"Do we have the original signature audit logs from the notary?" I asked, keeping my voice terrifyingly calm.

"We do," Marcus confirmed. "The IP address used to execute the digital signature matches Brielle’s personal laptop, routed through your home Wi-Fi while you were attending a conference in Chicago."

I closed the file with a decisive snap.

"They thought they were clever," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "They thought a research scientist only knew how to look through microscopes. They forgot that my entire life is spent analyzing evidence and documenting fraud."

"What's your next move?" Marcus asked.

"Call the District Attorney's financial crimes unit," I replied smoothly. "And tell my divorce attorneys to prepare an immediate freezing injunction on every account tied to Sunburst Ventures."
