Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the SanctuaryWith the legal battles finalized and Corbin behind bars awaiting sentencing, I returned my full attention to reclaiming my home and my life.

I hired a team of elite contractors to completely renovate the backyard. The pool was drained, scrubbed, and refitted with state-of-the-art filtration systems. The old pool furniture was thrown into a wood chipper, and every trace of Corbin’s presence was systematically removed from the property.

On a bright, sunny Saturday morning, I stood on the patio, watching the sparkling water refill the resort-style pool. The bougainvillea flowers were in full bloom, casting vibrant pink petals across the stone coping.

My phone chimed with a text notification from my lead scientist at Vance Chemical:

Dr. Vance, the international patent for Type 7 has been officially granted. Three major defense contractors are competing for exclusive distribution rights. Estimated valuation: $45 million.

I smiled, slipping my tablet back into my pocket.

The very chemical invention Corbin had dismissed as "boring lab work" had not only exposed his betrayal but had now elevated my company to international prominence.

My lifelong friend and lead counsel, Sarah, walked out onto the patio carrying two glasses of chilled champagne. She handed one to me and clinked her glass against mine.

"To fresh starts and flawless chemistry," Sarah toasted with a grin.

"To fresh starts," I agreed, taking a sip of the crisp wine.

"You know," Sarah looked out over the sparkling water, "most people would have been destroyed by what he did. You turned a personal tragedy into a masterclass in strategic retribution."

"In science, Sarah," I said, looking out at the sunlit gardens, "you never let emotional noise interfere with the result. You identify the toxic element, apply the correct reagent, and neutralize the threat."
