Chapter 10 - The Unshakable FoundationAs the first snowflakes of winter began to dust the rolling hills of Hartwell County, Claire and I sat on the front porch wrapped in heavy flannel blankets, watching the sun dip below the western ridge.

A steaming mug of hot cider sat on the wooden table between us. Duke, my old hound, lay curled up fast asleep near our boots, snoring softly in rhythm with the evening wind.

For twenty years, people had mistaken my quiet nature for weakness, assuming that because I didn't boast or roar, I had no backbone. They learned the hard way that true strength doesn't need to announce itself. It lives in the calloused hands that work the land, the steady heart that protects its own, and the unyielding foundation of a father’s love.

Claire leaned her head against my shoulder, letting out a long, contented sigh.

“It’s good to be home, Daddy,” she whispered.

I put my arm around her, looking out across the vast, quiet fields stretching out into the dusk.

“It sure is, sweetheart,” I said softly. “It sure is.”
