Chapter 6 - Reclaiming the PiecesThree days later, Claire woke up fully, her mind clear of the heavy fog of medication.

We sat together at the kitchen table, drinking warm tea while the morning sun streamed through the windowpanes. The bruises on her face were still dark and tender, but the haunted, terrified look in her eyes had been replaced by a quiet, fierce resilience.

“The lawyer called this morning, Dad,” Claire said softly, wrapping both hands around her mug. “Daniel signed the uncontested divorce papers. Every single asset he tried to hide has been recovered, and the settlement includes full financial restitution.”

“Good,” I said, refilling her cup from the ceramic pot. “You deserve every cent, and more.”

“And the Voss family... people are saying they’re packing up and moving out of state by the end of the week. Warren’s political career is completely over. Nobody will even look them in the eye at the grocery store anymore.”

“People who build their houses on sand usually find out how fast the ground washes away when the storm hits,” I replied gently.

Claire reached across the table, her fingers gently touching my calloused hand. Tears welled up in her good eye, but she was smiling.

“Thank you, Daddy,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “When he told me that nobody would believe me because my father was ‘nobody’... I was so scared. I thought I was trapped forever.”

I squeezed her hand back, feeling a surge of fierce, protective love that words could never fully capture.

“Nobody in this county ever gets to talk about my family that way, Claire,” I said softly. “You’re a Reed. And nobody here is a nobody.”
