Chapter 2 - The Silence of the PackThe grandfather clock in the corner of the grand dining hall ticked away the seconds with agonizing slowness. Tick. Tick. Tick.

Not a single soul at the long mahogany table dared to breathe, let alone stand.
Lavinia Bellaforte clutched her diamond-encrusted rosary beads so hard her knuckles turned chalk-white. Her ancient eyes, usually filled with unyielding tyranny, darted frantically toward the double doors where Damian was currently nursing his bruised ribs in the hallway. The realization that her son—her golden-boy enforcer—had just been tossed out like a sack of garbage by the head of the family was finally sinking into the marrow of her bones.
Antonio stood tall, his dark suit absorbing the harsh light of the chandelier, holding little Lucas securely against his chest. The boy’s breathing had slowed down, his small arms wrapped tightly around his father’s neck, his tear-stained face buried in the crook of Antonio’s collar.
“No one?” Antonio asked again, his voice dropping into an even more lethal register. He let his gaze drift slowly from uncle to cousin, pausing deliberately on each person who had avoided his eyes. “For twenty years, I have fed this family. I have protected your businesses, settled your debts, and kept your names clean of federal indictments. And in return, while my back was turned for two hours in a council room, you allowed my six-year-old child to be tied to a chair and starved.”
Uncle Vincent, the eldest surviving brother of Lavinia’s generation, swallowed hard, his throat bobbing nervously. He cleared his throat, trying to summon a shred of his former dignity.
“Antonio... please,” Vincent stammered, raising a trembling hand. “We... we didn't mean any real harm. Lavinia said the boy was becoming unruly. You’ve been busy with syndicate expansion, and we thought—”
“You thought you could govern my house?” Antonio interrupted, his voice slicing through the room like a scalpel. He stepped closer to Vincent’s end of the table, his eyes flashing with dark fury. “You thought because I was building an empire abroad that my bloodline was open for domestic abuse? You thought my son was fair game for your petty domestic power plays?”
“Antonio, listen to reason,” Lavinia finally spoke, her voice shaking with a mixture of rage and fear. She slammed her wrinkled hand onto the polished wood, trying to summon the matriarchal authority she had wielded for decades. “I raised you! I built this family! A Bellaforte heir cannot grow up weak! He needs discipline, structure, and absolute obedience! I was only doing what was necessary to mold him into a man who can command this syndicate when you're gone!”
Antonio turned his head slowly to look at his mother. There was no filial warmth in his eyes—only a bottomless, freezing void.
“You didn't mold an heir, Mother,” Antonio said quietly. “You tortured a child.”
He shifted Lucas slightly in his arms, whispering gently into the boy’s ear. “Hold on tight, Lucas. Daddy is taking you upstairs. We are leaving this room.”
As Antonio turned toward the grand staircase, Lavinia’s shrill voice cracked across the hall.
“If you walk away from this table, Antonio, you show weakness to the entire bloodline! They will think your reign is slipping! They will think you care more about a crying boy than the honor of the Bellaforte name!”
Antonio stopped at the base of the marble steps. He didn't turn around.
“Let them think whatever they want,” Antonio said without raising his voice. “By morning, every capo, lieutenant, and associate in this city will know what happens when someone touches my son. And by tomorrow night, this house will be cleaned from top to bottom.”
He mounted the stairs, his heavy boots echoing sharply against the stone steps, leaving the dining hall in a state of stunned, paralyzed terror.

Out in the corridor, Damian pushed himself up from the floor, his face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred. He stared up the grand staircase, rubbing his bruised ribs, whispering venomously to himself.
“You think you’re untouchable, Antonio?” Damian muttered, his fingers curling into tight fists. “Enjoy your little boy while you can. By the end of the week, the syndicate won't answer to you anymore.”
