Chapter 5 - Dawn of ReckoningThe morning sun broke over the sprawling Chicago estate, casting long, golden rays across the manicured lawns and iron security gates.

Inside the master suite, Lucas woke up warm and safe, curled up under the heavy down comforter of his father’s bed. When he opened his eyes, Antonio was already sitting in the armchair by the window, reading a physical copy of the Wall Street Journal with a cup of black coffee in hand.

“Daddy?” Lucas mumbled, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

Antonio lowered the newspaper immediately, standing up and walking over to the bed with a warm, gentle smile. He sat on the edge of the mattress, brushing a lock of dark hair from the boy’s forehead.

“Morning, champion,” Antonio said softly. “Did you sleep well?”

“Mmm-hmm,” Lucas nodded, smiling sleepily. “Are we going downstairs today?”

“We are,” Antonio replied, his expression turning firm. “But today is going to be different. Today, nobody is telling you where to sit, what to eat, or how to act. You stay close to me, and you watch how a Bellaforte handles his business. Do you understand?”

Lucas nodded solemnly, sensing the heavy, electric energy in the air.

Downstairs, the atmosphere in the estate was positively glacial. Word of the midnight council and the impending family assembly had leaked through the servants’ quarters by dawn. Uncle Vincent had spent the last hour pacing the length of the blue parlor, wringing his hands and whispering frantically to Aunt Beatrice about ruin, exile, and federal indictments.

In the west wing, Lavinia refused to leave her chambers. When a maid knocked on her door with breakfast, the old matriarch shouted through the wood, demanding that Antonio come to her immediately to answer for his insolence.

Antonio didn't go.

Instead, he spent his morning in the home office, signing a cascade of emergency asset-freezing orders prepared by Marcus, transferring every single corporate asset, real estate holding, and offshore dividend back into his sole, unchallengeable control.

By 5:00 PM, the black iron gates of the estate swung open to admit a continuous stream of luxury sedans and town cars.

Extended family members—uncles, aunts, cousins, and distant relatives who lived off the residual wealth of the Bellaforte syndicate—arrived in droves, dressed in their finest evening wear, whispering nervously among themselves as they were directed not to the dining hall, but straight into the grand ballroom.

The ballroom was magnificent, boasting twenty-foot ceilings, gilded moldings, and crystal mirrors lining the walls. But tonight, there were no banquet tables laden with food. There were only rows of folding chairs arranged facing a raised mahogany podium at the front of the room.

Standing beside the podium were Vance and Sal, flanked by four armed security operatives in crisp black suits.

At 6:00 PM sharp, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open.

Silence slammed over the room like a physical blow.

Antonio walked in, holding six-year-old Lucas gently by the hand. The boy was dressed in a sharp little navy-blue blazer and polished leather shoes, walking with his head held high, looking directly at the sea of startled relatives.

Behind them walked Lavinia, escorted reluctantly by two security guards, her face set in a mask of furious, trembling pride. Damian limped in last, leaning heavily on a cane, his ribs taped tightly beneath his tailored designer suit, glaring daggers at Antonio from the back of the room.

Antonio led Lucas to the front row, seating the boy safely in a comfortable armchair right beneath the podium. He leaned down, whispered a reassuring word, and then turned around, walking slowly up the steps of the mahogany platform.

He stood behind the podium, looking out over the fifty gathered members of his extended family.

No one dared to whisper. No one dared to breathe.

Antonio rested his hands flat on the polished wood, his dark eyes sweeping slowly across the room, before he finally spoke into the silent microphone.
