Chapter 6 - The Return of the DebtorsThree days later, the reality of their situation caught up with them.

I was at my desk working on a budget forecast when my phone buzzed with an incoming call from a restricted number. Knowing it was likely them, I slid my thumb across the screen to answer, needing to end this cycle once and for all.
"Valerie?!" My mother’s voice shrieked through the speaker. She sounded panicked, exhausted, and utterly defeated. Gone was the haughty, entitled tone she’d used in the airport. "Valerie, thank God you picked up! You have to help us!"
I didn't say hello. I leaned back in my ergonomic chair, keeping my voice entirely neutral. "What do you want, Mom?"
"We are at a terrible, dingy little motel forty minutes outside of Paris!" Mom sobbed, her voice cracking. "We had to sell Danielle’s designer watch and my gold necklace just to pay for two nights in this dreadful room! We haven't eaten a proper meal in two days, and your father’s blood pressure medication ran out!"
"Then go to a local pharmacy and a hospital," I said calmly. "You're adults."
"We don't have Euros left, Valerie! Everything is gone!" Mom wailed. "We tried to use our credit cards, but the banks froze them because of the unpaid balances! Please, honey, wire us some money. Just enough for plane tickets home. We'll pay you back, I swear on my life!"
I closed my eyes, taking a steady breath. How many times had I heard those exact words? We'll pay you back, I swear on my life.
"No, Mom," I said softly.
Silence descended on the line. For a second, I thought the call had dropped. Then my mother’s voice returned, laced with sudden, venomous disbelief.
"What did you say?"
"I said no," I repeated clearly. "I am not wiring you money. I am not paying for your plane tickets. You chose to fly to Paris, and you chose to treat me the way you did at the airport. You made your choices. Now you get to live with the consequences."
"You are our daughter!" Richard shouted in the background, grabbing the phone from my mother. His voice was trembling with furious indignation. "I brought you into this world! I raised you! How dare you leave your own parents stranded in a foreign country?! I'm going to disown you! I'm cutting you out of the family forever!"
"Dad, you already did that when you slapped me in the middle of a crowded airport terminal and told me I was a burden," I replied, my voice hard as diamonds. "And as for cutting me out of the family? Consider it a mutual resignation. I resign from being your ATM. I resign from being the scapegoat. Do not call this number again."
I hung up the phone.

This time, I didn't just block the number. I went into my carrier settings and permanently blocked my parents' and Danielle's phone lines, as well as their email addresses.
They were on their own.
