Chapter 4 - The Scent of Cyanide

*(Word count: ~2,020 words)*

The sun rose over Beverly Hills like a clean sheet of brass, burning away the morning marine layer but doing nothing to warm the chill inside the mansion.

At 7:30 AM, I walked down to the breakfast conservatory dressed in a bespoke charcoal Tom Ford suit.

Vanessa was already seated at the marble bistro table, bathed in soft California sunlight. She wore a floral silk dress, her hair pinned up with understated elegance. In front of her sat a fresh pot of French press coffee, a plate of sliced papaya, and a small stack of invitation proofs for Friday's gala.

"Good morning, my love," she purred, looking up with a radiant smile that would have fooled any jury in the world. "How are you feeling? Did your throat calm down?"

"Much better," I said, pulling out a chair and sitting opposite her. "Just exhaustion. Once this merger closes and Friday’s gala is behind us, I think we should take the yacht to Bora Bora for two weeks. Just the two of us."

Her eyes flashed with genuine triumph. "That sounds heavenly, Daniel. You deserve a break. You’ve carried the weight of the Whitmore name all by yourself for so long."

"Speaking of the gala," I reached across the table, picked up the silver creamer, and poured a splash into a cup of black coffee. I intentionally picked up *her* cup, took a measured sip, and set it down.

Vanessa’s breath caught for half a second. She watched the cup, waiting to see if I’d noticed anything, then relaxed when she realized it was her own untouched drink.

"I spoke with our legal counsel, Harrison Wright, this morning," I continued casually, buttering a piece of brioche. "He’s finalizing the revised foundation charter. The board approved the power-of-attorney clause. At the gala, right after my opening address, I’m going to officially name you as co-trustee of the Whitmore Family Trust."

Vanessa’s hand trembled slightly as she set her fork down. The predatory greed in her eyes was almost impossible for her to suppress.

"Daniel... are you sure? That’s such an immense responsibility."

"I’ve never been more certain," I said, reaching across the table and taking her hand. Her fingers were slender, delicate, and cold. "After what happened last night with Maria... it made me realize how fragile life is. Andrew is gone. My parents are gone. If something happens to me, I want to know that everything my family built is in the hands of someone who loves me."

"I do love you, Daniel," she whispered, leaning forward to kiss my cheek. "More than you could ever possibly know."

"I'll see you this evening, darling," I said, standing up and buttoning my suit jacket. "I have back-to-back meetings in Century City."

"Have a wonderful day, sweetheart."

I walked out to the courtyard, climbed into the back of my town car, and as soon as the iron gates slid shut behind us, I pulled out my secure phone.

"Frank. Did you intercept the hospital?"

"Ten minutes ago," Frank’s gravelly voice replied through the speaker. "You were right on the money. At 6:45 AM, an orderly entered Maria’s room carrying an IV bag loaded with potassium chloride. Our boys took him down in the hallway before he reached the door."

My jaw tightened. "Who was he?"

"Local freelance muscle with a record out of Long Beach. He was promised fifty thousand in cash to clear Maria’s monitor. He had a burner phone with one saved contact. The number traced back to that same marine facility in San Pedro."

"Is Maria safe?"

"She’s already been moved," Frank said. "We transported her via private ambulance to the medical wing at Camp Pendleton under military clearance. Nobody touches her there. She’s awake, Daniel. She’s asking for Noah."

"Tell her Noah is safe and eating pancakes at the safe house," I ordered. "Now, what did our surveillance find at San Pedro?"

"You need to see this for yourself," Frank replied grimly. "I’m sending you a live feed from drone unit four."

I tapped my tablet screen. A high-resolution thermal and optical feed appeared.

The camera hovered over an expansive, rusted shipyard facility wedged between commercial shipping containers in San Pedro. Sitting in the center of a dry dock was a sixty-foot offshore racing cruiser—the *Nemesis*.

Standing on the rusted gangway was a tall man wearing a dark tactical jacket and aviator sunglasses. He held a satellite phone to his ear, pacing back and forth with an arrogant, familiar stride.

The drone zoomed in, stabilizing on his face.

The breath vanished from my lungs.

It was Andrew.

He was thirty-two now. His hair was cropped shorter than the golden locks he wore during his college days, and a clean, pale scar ran along his left jawline, but there was no mistaking the sharp, patrician features of my younger brother. He looked healthy. He looked strong.

He looked entirely alive while I had spent six years mourning his memory.

I watched him hang up the phone, walk over to a wooden crate, and pull out a high-caliber semi-automatic rifle. He racked the slide with practiced ease, inspected the magazine, and slid it back into a locked pelican case.

"He’s not just planning a corporate takeover, is he, Frank?" I whispered, my voice flat with icy clarity.

"No," Frank said. "The gala is at the Whitmore Heritage Estate in Pasadena on Friday night. It’s surrounded by thirty acres of private woodland. Andrew isn't waiting for probate or insurance payouts. Once you sign those co-trustee documents on stage, making Vanessa the legal executioner of the estate... they plan to stage a home-invasion robbery on your motorcade when you return to Beverly Hills."

"A clean kill," I said. "Vanessa inherits everything instantly as the registered co-trustee and surviving fiancĂŠe. Maria dies in the hospital from 'complications' of her fall. And Andrew collects forty million in foreign bonds and vanishes into the South Pacific with Vanessa."

"That’s the game," Frank agreed. "Except they have no idea we have the boy. They don't know Maria survived. And they have no idea you're looking directly at them."

"Frank," I said, staring at the screen as Andrew laughed with an associate on the deck of the yacht. "Contact our legal team and the head of the federal prosecutor's financial crimes unit. Tell them I want a closed grand jury warrant issued under seal by noon tomorrow."

"And what about Friday night?"

May you like

"Friday night," I said, watching my dead brother clean his weapon, "we give Andrew Whitmore the family reunion he deserves."
