Chapter 8 - The Unmasking

*(Word count: ~2,050 words)*
The entire pavilion fell deathly silent.
Four hundred guests exchanged bewildered glances. The board members in the front row shifted uncomfortably in their seats.
Vanessa slowly lowered her handkerchief. The color began to drain from her cheeks, her blue eyes narrowing with sudden, vicious calculation.
"Daniel?" she called out, forcing a nervous, delicate laugh that carried to the front tables. "Darling... what are you doing? This isn't the speech we rehearsed."
I didn't look at her. I kept my eyes fixed on the live camera.
"Six years ago, Andrew Whitmore didn't drown," I announced, every word echoing off the canvas ceiling like a crack of thunder. "He faked his death to evade multi-million-dollar fraud investigations and to abandon the woman carrying his unborn child. He laundered forty million dollars into offshore shell companies in the Caymans. And then, he sent his partner to finish what he started."
A collective gasp swept through the ballroom. Whispers erupted like a swarm of hornets.
"Daniel, stop this!" Vanessa hissed, rising to her feet. Her elegant posture was gone, replaced by a rigid, coiled fury. She stepped toward the stage, her voice dropping into a desperate, frantic command. "Turn off the microphones! Heâs having a nervous breakdown! Security, get him down from there!"
Two private security guards moved forward, but before they could take two steps, Special Agent Marcus Cole and four undercover FBI agents intercepted them, flashing gold badges and drawing their sidearms.
"Federal agents! Nobody move! Stay in your seats!" Cole bellowed.
Screams broke out among the high-society crowd. Donors scrambled away from the stage, knocking over champagne flutes and crystal centerpieces.
I pointed directly down at Vanessa.
"Her name is not Vanessa Covington," I said into the microphone. "Her real name is Vanessa Drake. She is an international con artist, corporate extortionist, and attempted murderer."
"You're lying!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away toward the perimeter of the marquee. "Heâs insane! Look at him! Heâs grieving his brother and losing his mind!"
"On Tuesday night at 12:04 AM," I continued, my voice cutting through the panic, "Vanessa was caught dragging our housekeeper, Maria Alvarez, across broken glass after bashing her skull with a brass statue. Why? Because Maria discovered that Vanessa and Andrew were plotting to assassinate me following this very gala."
On the massive digital projector screens flanking the main stage, the presentation slides of youth hospitals suddenly vanished.
In their place appeared the crystal-clear thermal and optical footage captured by our surveillance drones: Andrew Whitmore pacing the deck of the *Nemesis* in San Pedro, holding high-caliber firearms, accompanied by digital transcripts of the offshore wire transfers between Vanessa Drake and Acheron Holdings.
Then, the audio recording of Andrewâs phone call from the cemetery blasted through the stadium-grade speakers:
*âI decided to take what was mine. All of it... Vanessa was the best investment I ever made... She told me you were so desperate for a family, Danny... that you swallowed every single word she fed you.â*
Vanessa froze.
Hearing Andrewâs recorded voice echo across the room, exposing every detail of their conspiracy in front of the press, the politicians, and the federal authorities, snapped her sanity.
Her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. The refined Southern belle, the sweet, doting fiancĂŠeâevery single layer of her false identity shattered into dust.
"You miserable, pathetic bastard!" she screamed at me, lunging toward the stage with her emerald-clad hands clawed like talons. "You think you won?! Andrew is already on his way! He has men outside this gate right now! You won't leave this tent alive, Daniel!"
Special Agent Cole tackled her to the carpet before she reached the steps.
Vanessa thrashed violently, kicking her designer heels, cursing with a gutter-level fury that horrified the fleeing socialites. Cole pinned her wrists behind her back and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists, right over her diamond tennis bracelets.
"Vanessa Drake," Cole recited coldly, hauling her up by her arms. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, federal wire fraud, aggravated assault, and corporate extortion."
"Andrew will kill you, Daniel!" Vanessa spat, blood from her split lip spraying onto her green ballgown as she glared at me with feral hatred. "Heâll burn your whole life to the ground! You hear me?! Youâre dead!"
"Andrew isn't killing anyone tonight, Vanessa," I said, stepping down from the stage and looking her dead in the eyes.
At that exact moment, my earpiece crackled to life with Frank Vanceâs voice, backed by the deafening roar of marine engines and the thud of helicopter rotors.
"Daniel! Coast Guard intercepted the *Nemesis* two miles off Santa Monica pier! Andrew refused to surrender! He launched the Zodiac and rammed the Coast Guard cutter! Gunfire exchangedâheâs heading for the shoreline!"
My blood went cold.
"Where is he landing, Frank?!"
"The private marina at Malibu," Frank yelled over the static. "Heâs heading straight for the beach house! Daniel... Noah and Elena aren't at the downtown penthouse anymore!"
Panic seized my chest like a vice. "What are you talking about?!"
"Maria suffered a respiratory crisis twenty minutes ago! The Camp Pendleton medical transport moved her to UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monicaâand Elena brought Noah along in the private escort car! Andrewâs intercept trajectory puts him right in their path!"
I turned to Agent Cole. "Cole! Keep this monster in custody. Andrew is landing in Santa Monica. My family is exposed."

I didn't wait for a response. I ripped off my tuxedo bow tie, sprinted past the screaming crowd, and burst out into the cool night air toward Frank Vanceâs waiting car.
