Chapter 10 - The New FoundationSix months later, the spring sun was shining brightly through the large, bay windows of my new home—a charming, sun-drenched craftsman house with a wide front porch, a sturdy wooden fence, and no wells in the backyard.

In the nursery upstairs, two tiny, identical cribs stood side by side, filled with the soft, sweet sounds of peaceful breathing.

Leo and Leah—healthy, beautiful, thriving twins born with strong lungs and bright, curious eyes—were fast asleep, completely unaware of the raging storm their mother had had to weather to bring them safely into the world.

I stood in the bright, open kitchen, pouring fresh lemon water into a glass while watching the robins dart across the lush green lawn outside.

My cell phone rested on the kitchen counter. A clean, silent screen. No threatening calls, no abusive texts, no suffocating demands.

Just peace.

Marcus was currently facing a federal grand jury indictment for corporate wire fraud and embezzlement, staring down the very real prospect of a decade behind bars in a federal penitentiary. His prestigious architectural firm had collapsed into bankruptcy receivership, his professional reputation permanently incinerated by his own hubris and greed.

He had tried to build an empire on lies, intimidation, and cruelty, believing he could control every variable in his glass house.

He just forgot one crucial detail of architecture:

A house built without a foundation of truth will always crumble the moment the ground begins to shake. And the woman he tried to bury in the mud?

She was the one who knew where all the weak spots were.

I took a slow, refreshing sip of my lemon water, placed the glass down on the counter, and walked upstairs to check on my babies, ready to write the next chapter of a life that was entirely, beautifully my own.
