Chapter 6 - The Tiger in the CourtroomThe offices of Vance & Sterling Legal Advocates occupied the entire thirty-second floor of a sleek glass-and-steel high-rise overlooking downtown Chicago.

Attorney Julian Vance—a sharp-dressed man in his mid-forties with piercing blue eyes, silver-streaked hair, and a reputation for tearing corporate white-collar criminals to pieces—sat behind his polished mahogany desk, staring at the open laptop screen in absolute, stunned silence.
For ten minutes, the only sound in the luxurious office was the rhythmic tapping of his gold fountain pen against the blotter as he scrolled through the financial folders I had handed over.
Finally, Julian leaned back in his leather executive chair, slowly taking off his wire-rimmed reading glasses and rubbing his eyes.
"Mrs. Vance—Clara," Julian said, his voice laced with a mixture of profound shock and professional awe. "If half of this data holds up under forensic auditing, your husband isn't just looking at a messy divorce or a civil asset split. He’s looking at federal indictments for corporate wire fraud, money laundering, and grand larceny. This is millions of dollars in untracked siphon funds."
"It's all real, Julian," I said calmly, sitting erect in the client chair, my hands resting lightly over my still-flat stomach. "Marcus kept meticulous digital records because his supreme arrogance convinced him nobody would ever dare audit his private files. He thought he was untouchable."
Julian let out a low whistle, a predatory grin spreading across his face. "Well, arrogance is a white-collar criminal's best friend. But tell me, Clara—what is your primary objective here? Do you want to use this leverage to negotiate a clean, fast settlement, or do you want to watch his entire empire burn to the ground?"
I didn't hesitate for a single second.
"Both," I said quietly. "I want full, unencumbered custody of my twins. I want the house, all joint liquid assets, and a lifetime alimony structure that ensures my children will never have to worry about financial security. And as for the rest of his empire..." I paused, locking my eyes onto his. "Let the federal prosecutors have whatever is left after we take what's ours."
Julian let out a sharp, delighted laugh, tossing his pen onto the desk. "I love working with analytical minds. Consider it done, Clara. My legal team will file an emergency civil freeze on all of Marcus’s personal and corporate accounts by this afternoon, before his defense attorneys even finish filing their bail paperwork."
"Will he be able to post bail?" I asked, a slight knot forming in my stomach.

"Oh, he’ll post bail," Julian smiled coldly. "His wealthy business associates and family will scrape together the cash to spring him out of county jail by tomorrow morning. But the moment he steps outside those precinct doors, he’s going to find out that his bank accounts are frozen, his credit cards are declined, and his corporate life has imploded into a smoking crater."
A profound sense of vindication warmed my chest. The terrified woman who had knelt in the mud by the well two nights ago was gone. In her place stood a survivor preparing to reclaim her life.
