Chapter 10 - The Unbroken HorizonA year after that fateful Sunday dinner, I stood on the private terrace of my downtown loft, watching the sunset paint the sky in deep shades of gold, violet, and crimson.

The air was cool and crisp, carrying the distant, comforting hum of the city streets sixty feet below. I held a warm mug of tea in my hands, wearing a soft cashmere sweater, feeling completely, profoundly at peace.

Every now and then, a legal update would land on my desk.

Jackson was serving his time at a state facility downstate, assigned to facility maintenance details, spending his days learning the true meaning of hard work and humility. Richard was locked away in a federal prison, his name scrubbed from every real estate board in the country. Genesis lived quietly in her small suburban apartment, entirely forgotten by the high-society circle she had sacrificed her integrity to appease.

They had thought that because I was a woman who kept her head down and didn't yell, I was weak. They had thought that marriage gave them ownership over my property, my hard-earned money, and my dignity. They had believed that intimidation and violence would force me into submission.

They had learned the hardest lesson of their lives: that quiet people are not weak people—they are simply patient.

I took a slow, deep breath of the fresh evening air, looking out at the endless horizon of the city before me.

My home was mine. My future was mine. My life was entirely, unshakeably my own.

And as the last golden rays of the sun dipped below the skyscrapers, I smiled, knowing that no one would ever dare to lock a door on me again.
