Chapter 4 - The Boardroom StrikeAt 8:00 AM on Monday morning, the glass tower of Blackwood Real Estate Ventures sat gleaming under the pale autumn sun in the heart of the financial district.

Inside the 30th-floor executive board room, Richard Blackwood was hosting his quarterly investor breakfast. The room was filled with sixteen high-net-worth developers, city officials, and private equity managers, all sipping dark coffee and eating pastries while Richard stood at the head of the mahogany table, holding a digital pointer.

Jackson sat in the front row, wearing a fresh navy suit, though his eyes were bloodshot and his skin was pale from spending six hours in a hotel room downtown. He was leaning toward his father, whispering agitatedly.

"She locked the doors, Dad," Jackson hissed under his breath. "She rekeyed the entire loft. She's completely lost her mind."

Richard didn't even look at his son. "Keep your voice down, Jackson. We have thirty million dollars in private placements being signed today. We will deal with your disobedient wife tonight. I will personally call her landlord—"

"She owns the building's top floor outright, Richard," Jackson muttered bitterly. "She doesn't have a landlord."

"Then we will cut off her credit lines," Richard said smoothly, adjusting his cuffs. "Women like Clara rely on structure. Once she realizes she can't access our legal team or our social circle, she will come crawling back on her knees to apologize to your mother."

Before Jackson could answer, the frosted glass double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Two men in tailored dark charcoal suits walked into the room, followed immediately by three uniformed officers from the State Financial Crimes Division and a woman carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

The room fell dead silent. The private equity managers lowered their coffee cups, exchanging anxious glances.

Richard’s posture stiffened instantly. He set the digital pointer down on the podium, his face hardening into an authoritative sneer.

"May I help you?" Richard demanded, stepping forward with practiced executive arrogance. "This is a private corporate meeting. You are trespassing on private property."

Marcus Vance stepped out from behind the officers, pulling a set of blue-backed legal documents from his briefcase.

"Richard Blackwood," Marcus said, his deep baritone carrying effortlessly across the silent room. "I am Marcus Vance, lead counsel representing Clara Vance—formerly Clara Blackwood."

Jackson bolted out of his leather chair, his face turning ashen. "Marcus? What the hell is this?! Clara sent you?!"

Marcus didn't even acknowledge Jackson’s existence. He laid three thick, red-stamped binders directly onto the center of the boardroom table, right beside the tray of untouched pastries.

"We are serving Blackwood Real Estate Ventures with an immediate, court-ordered freeze on all commercial capital acquisitions," Marcus announced smoothly. "Additionally, we have delivered a certified forensic audit report to the Treasury Department, detailing four years of systematic tax evasion, wire fraud, and illegal offshore capital routing executed through shell entities in the Grand Cayman."

Gasps erupted around the boardroom. Two investors immediately stood up, grabbing their coats and phones.

"This is absurd!" Richard boomed, his face turning a dangerous shade of crimson as he slammed his palm onto the podium. "This is a malicious, unfounded attack by a bitter woman! Clara has no access to our corporate books! She is a housewife!"

Marcus offered a thin, razor-sharp smile.

"Clara isn't a housewife, Mr. Blackwood," Marcus said softly, leaning over the table. "She is the former Chief Compliance Officer for the Midwestern Regional Audit Bureau. She was the person who drafted your firm's secondary risk assessment during your 2022 restructuring. She knows where every single body is buried—because you paid her firm to find them."

Richard’s jaw went completely slack. He looked at Jackson, his eyes widening in pure, unadulterated terror.

"Jackson..." Richard whispered, his voice cracking for the first time in his life. "What did she do?"

Jackson stood frozen beside his chair, staring at the thick red binders on the table, the color completely drained from his face as the crushing realization hit him like a physical blow.

He had thought his wife was just a quiet girl with a nice apartment.

He had no idea she held the detonator to his family's entire existence.
