Chapter 5 - The UnravelingTrue to my word, I didn't blast the audio file across social media on Monday morning. I’m not a monster, and I wanted to protect my daughter from unnecessary public collateral damage.

Instead, I did things the right way.
First thing Monday morning, I walked into the office of Sarah Vance—one of the most ruthless, highly recommended family law attorneys in the city.
Sarah sat behind her polished mahogany desk, reviewing the digital flash drive I had placed between us. She listened to the three-minute recording of Liam’s phone call with Chloe, watched the time-stamped transaction logs from his corporate credit card showing dinners at high-end steakhouses, and examined the property deeds.
When she pulled off her reading glasses, a slow, approving smile spread across her face.
"Mrs. Vance," Sarah said, leaning back in her leather executive chair. "In my fifteen years of practicing family law, I have rarely seen a client hand over such a pristine, open-and-shut case of willful marital abandonment, emotional cruelty, and financial dissipation on a silver platter."
"I want full physical and legal custody of my daughter," I stated firmly, folding my hands in my lap. "I want the house. I want maximum spousal and child support. And I want his employer notified of his gross misconduct if he so much as hiccups during the mediation process."
"Done," Sarah said without missing a beat. "We’ll file the emergency petition this afternoon. Given his position at the firm, and the fact that he was conducting an affair with a subordinate using company resources during business hours, his legal team won't dare let this go to a public trial. He’ll fold like a cheap tent."
And fold he did.
When Liam’s high-priced defense attorneys received the initial discovery package—including the transcript of his conversation with Chloe—they didn't even attempt a rebuttal. Within forty-eight hours, Liam’s lawyer called Sarah to request an immediate, quiet, out-of-court settlement.
They agreed to every single term I demanded.
The house was signed over entirely into my name. The bank accounts were split in my favor, complete with an ironclad child support agreement that secured Hailey’s financial future through college.

As for Chloe? Well, corporate HR at Liam’s accounting firm received an anonymous package containing the audio file and proof of inappropriate supervisor-subordinate fraternization. By the end of the week, Chloe had quietly resigned from her position to avoid a formal termination hearing, and Liam found himself facing a mandatory internal ethics review that permanently derailed his fast-track promotion to senior partner.
The golden boy had fallen from grace, crashing hard into the very concrete reality he thought he was too clever to touch.
