Chapter 6 - A New DawnSix months later, the autumn wind rustled the golden leaves outside the kitchen window, carrying the crisp, clean scent of a new season.

I stood at the kitchen island, pouring warm water into a bottle for Hailey, who was sitting in her high chair banging a plastic rattle against the tray with joyful, chaotic energy. She was six months old now, laughing, babbling, and blooming into a bright, happy baby who had no memory of the toxic tension that had once poisoned our home.

My phone buzzed on the counter.

I glanced down at the screen. It was an email notification from my attorney confirming that the final divorce decree had been officially stamped and sealed by the judge.

It was over.

The legal nightmare was behind me. The ghost of Liam’s betrayal had been exorcised, replaced by the quiet, unshakeable strength of a woman who had looked into the abyss of deception and chosen to rebuild her life entirely on her own terms.

Liam lived in a cramped, two-bedroom apartment across town now. He saw Hailey on alternating weekends under strict supervision, looking tired, older, and thoroughly humbled by the wreckage of his choices. He tried to apologize during our brief custody handoffs, offering weak platitudes about how much he regretted everything, but I rarely listened. Words were cheap. Actions were permanent.

I picked up Hailey’s bottle, walked over to the high chair, and scooped my giggling daughter up into my arms.

"Come on, my sweet girl," I whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "Let's go outside and enjoy the sunshine."

As I stepped out onto the back porch, the morning sun broke through the clouds, bathing the yard in a warm, golden glow. I took a deep breath of the crisp air, feeling light, untethered, and entirely free.

He thought he had buried me with a lie.

Instead, he had simply given me the chance to plant a garden.
