Chapter 6 - The Paper Fortress

At seven o'clock the following morning, Elena Vance sat across from me in my living room, surrounded by dozens of blue-bound legal ledgers. Next to her sat Richard Sterling, a former federal prosecutor who now headed the white-collar defense practice at one of the country's most formidable firms.

"Grant wasn't lying about the signature," Elena said, pointing a pen at a forensic handwriting analysis report. "He did use your digital certificate while you were hospitalized in November 2021. The Delaware incorporation documents carry your encrypted cryptographic hash."

"However," Richard Sterling chimed in, leaning forward with a sharp, predatory glint in his eyes, "Mr. Waverly was remarkably sloppy. Because he believed you were entirely detached from the corporate governance side, he didn't realize your father had instituted a dual-key security protocol on all Montgomery family assets back in 2019."

I turned the page of the dossier. "Explain."

"Every time your digital signature was applied to a document exceeding one hundred thousand dollars," Richard explained, "a secondary biometric verification was routed to an encrypted server maintained by your father’s estate trust. When Grant executed those Cayman transfers from the penthouse, the system flagged the lack of secondary biometric clearance."

"So the transfers were logged as unauthorized?"

"Not just unauthorized," Elena smiled, taking a sip of black coffee. "The platform automatically archived the exact MAC address, webcam security capture, and IP geolocation of the machine executing the transfer. We have seventeen distinct, high-resolution snapshots of Grant sitting at his penthouse desk, entering your forged credentials while Sabrina Hale was sitting on the sofa behind him holding the wire confirmation codes."

I leaned back against the cushions, feeling a massive weight lift from my shoulders. "He handed us the entire criminal conspiracy on a silver platter."

"It gets worse for him," Elena added. "Sabrina Hale’s lawyer contacted my office forty minutes ago. It turns out that when Grant realized the board was freezing his assets yesterday, he tried to drain Sabrina’s secondary checking account—the one where he had stashed six hundred thousand dollars of the siphoned funds. He tried to leave her holding the bag."

"And how did Sabrina take that?" I asked.

"She’s currently sitting in the District Attorney's office with her attorney," Richard Sterling said with a quiet chuckle. "Offering a full proffer agreement. She is turning state’s evidence against Grant in exchange for immunity on the grand larceny counts. She’s handing over every text message, every encrypted voice memo, and every offshore routing number he ever gave her."

Before I could reply, a sudden, sharp pain tore through my lower abdomen.

It wasn't the dull ache of a Braxton Hicks contraction. It was a fierce, searing clamp that pulled my breath straight out of my throat. I gasped, my hands flying to my belly as my tea mug slipped from my fingers and shattered against the hardwood floor.

"Claire?" Elena was on her feet instantly.

"The baby..." I choked out, a cold sweat breaking across my forehead. "Elena... it’s happening. Call Melanie."
