Chapter 8 - The Dawn of Maya

The delivery room at Mount Sinai was flooded with the clean, bright light of an early winter morning.

At 11:14 AM, following four hours of grueling, focused labor overseen by Dr. Melanie Foster and an exceptional team of nurses, the room was suddenly filled with the clear, piercing cry of new life.

"Look at her, Claire," Melanie whispered, her eyes shining above her surgical mask as she placed a warm, perfect, seven-pound baby girl onto my bare chest. "She’s exquisite."

The exhaustion that had weighed on my bones for months evaporated the second her tiny fingers brushed against my skin. She had dark hair like mine, a perfect rosebud mouth, and an iron grip that wrapped immediately around my thumb.

"Maya," I breathed, tears finally breaking free and rolling down my cheeks. "Your name is Maya Montgomery."

Not Waverly. Not a single trace of the man who had tried to crush us.

While I lay in the recovery room holding my daughter, the outside world continued its merciless dismantling of Grant Waverly.

Elena Vance stepped quietly into the room around two in the afternoon, holding a bouquet of white peonies and a fresh copy of the *New York Times*. She took one look at Maya sleeping peacefully in the bassinet beside my bed and smiled softly.

"How is the new CEO of Montgomery Logistics doing?" Elena asked in a hushed tone.

"She’s sleeping," I said, smiling tiredly. "Tell me everything. Don't spare the details."

Elena pulled a chair close to the bed, lowering her voice. "Grant was denied bail two hours ago at his arraignment. The judge took one look at the garage security footage—where he blocked your vehicle during active labor—and deemed him an acute flight risk and an active danger to society."

"And the Southern District?"

"They dropped the hammer," Elena said, handing me the business section. "A twenty-four-count indictment was unsealed. Wire fraud, money laundering, grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and tax evasion spanning three years. Sabrina Hale signed a complete confession this morning. She handed over the offshore keys and confirmed that Grant planned the entire scheme to divert company funds into European accounts before divorcing you."

I glanced down at the front page. Grant’s mugshot was plastered below the fold—disheveled, hollow-eyed, the arrogance completely wiped from his features.

*"Grant Waverly Indicted in Multi-Million Dollar Corporate Fraud Scheme; Ousted by Board."*

"What about the acquisition?" I asked.

"Julian Vance and the board met at noon," Elena replied. "They formally voted to rebrand the company as Montgomery-Pacific Logistics. They’ve named you permanent Chief Executive Officer and Managing Chairwoman of the Board. Pacific Maritime came back to the table thirty minutes ago. They want to close the deal on your terms, Claire. They specifically stated they will only deal with you."

I looked over at Maya, her tiny chest rising and falling beneath the soft hospital blanket.

"We’ll sign the papers next week," I said. "Right now, I have more important work to do."
