Chapter 4 - THE HUNTED (1,800 words)The lobby of the Carlton Hotel in Cannes was buzzing with international jet-setters, but in the small business center near the rear corridor, panic hung in the air like thick smoke.

Richard was pacing back and forth across the carpet, his linen shirt soaked with sweat, his hair disheveled. Eleanor was sitting in an armchair, weeping hysterically into a silk handkerchief, while Vanessa sat on the desk, frantically scrolling through her banking app on her phone.
"Every single card is dead!" Vanessa shrieked, slamming her iPhone onto the desk. "My personal card, the card you gave me for clothes, even my Amex! Richard, my hotel room in Cannes was canceled! They threw my luggage into the manager's office!"
"Shut up, Vanessa! Just shut up for one second!" Richard screamed, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desk.
"Don't you dare talk to her like that!" Eleanor sobbed, fanning herself with a brochure. "Richard, this is insane! How could that crippled girl survive sixty-eight days? It’s only been seventeen days! Did someone find her? Did Maria go back?"
"I told Maria I’d ruin her life if she went near that room!" Richard rasped, running his hands through his hair. "She couldn't have gotten out! That door was solid steel! The lock was heavy-duty!"
"Well, she did get out!" Vanessa spat, her tone stripped of all the fake affection she had shown him for the past six months. "And now I’m stranded in France with no money, no yacht, and my followers are making memes out of me being kicked off the dock in Saint-Tropez! Do you know what this is doing to my brand?!"
"Your brand?!" Richard snapped, leaning into her face, his eyes bloodshot. "My entire life is being liquidated, you vain idiot! My bank accounts are frozen! My firm’s lines of credit are closed! If I can't get back to Miami and settle this, I’m going to prison!"
"Then buy us plane tickets home!" Eleanor whined.
"With what?!" Richard roared. "I have eighty-four euros in cash in my wallet! That's it! Every digital asset I own is locked down tight by her trustees!"
At that exact moment, two French police officers accompanied by a tall, impeccably dressed man in a dark charcoal suit entered the business center.
The man in the suit held a polished leather briefcase. He stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Richard with absolute indifference.
"Mr. Richard Barrett?" the man asked in a crisp British accent.
Richard froze. "Who are you?"
"My name is Julian Mercer. I am senior legal counsel representing the Vance Family Estate Trust," the man said smoothly. He opened his briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of legal documents bound with red ribbon. "I have been instructed by Mrs. Elena Vance-Barrett to serve you personally."
Eleanor let out a sharp gasp. Vanessa took a step back, instantly trying to distance herself from Richard.
"Serve me?" Richard stuttered. "Serve me with what? This is France! You have no jurisdiction here!"
"Actually, Mr. Barrett, under international maritime and commercial asset recovery laws, we have secured a provisional asset attachment order through the High Court of Paris," Julian replied calmly. He handed the first set of papers to Richard. "This is a formal notice of criminal indictment for attempted murder, grand larceny, fraud, and elder abuse."
Richard’s face went completely ghostly white. "Attempted... attempted murder?"
"Leaving a severely ill individual locked in an unventilated room without water, electricity, or prescribed life-sustaining medication constitutes clear intent to cause fatal harm under both Florida state law and international extraditable statutes," Julian said, his voice completely devoid of emotion.
Julian pulled out a second document. "This is an emergency order of eviction and repossession. The clothes you are currently wearing, the luxury watches on your wrist, and the designer bags sitting by your feet were all purchased using misappropriated trust funds within the last thirty days. They are now evidence in an ongoing international fraud investigation."
"You can't take my watch!" Richard yelled, pulling his wrist back defensively, guarding his Rolex.
"If you refuse to surrender the items voluntarily, the local gendarmerie standing behind me will arrest you immediately for possession of stolen property under French jurisdiction," Julian said, motioning to the two officers.
The French officers stepped forward, their hands resting comfortably on their tactical belts. One of them spoke in sharp, authoritative French: "Veuillez coopérer, Monsieur."
"Richard..." Vanessa whimpered, stepping away. "I... I didn't know anything about this! I was just an invited guest! I didn't lock anyone in a room!"
Vanessa grabbed her personal handbag and tried to hurry past the officers toward the lobby exit.
"Miss Vanessa Drake?" Julian called out politely without turning around.
Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks. "What?"
Julian pulled a third, smaller document from his briefcase. "Mrs. Vance-Barrett has also filed a civil lawsuit against you personally for civil conspiracy, theft of personal property, and tortious interference. Furthermore, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division has been notified regarding the sixty-five thousand dollars in unreported cash gifts Richard transferred into your offshore account last month. Your passport has been flagged."
Vanessa’s jaw dropped. The color drained completely from her face. "My... my passport?"
"You are currently restricted from leaving the European Schengen zone until you surrender all gifts, jewelry, and funds received from Mr. Barrett," Julian stated smoothly. "Have a pleasant afternoon, Miss Drake."
Vanessa turned to Richard, her eyes filled with pure, unadulterated venom. "You lied to me! You told me she was a crazy ex-wife who was dying anyway! You destroyed my life!" She threw her coffee cup at Richard’s chest, splashing hot liquid all over his linen shirt, before bursting into tears and running down the corridor.
"Vanessa! Wait!" Eleanor screamed, reaching out. But the young mistress was already gone, lost in the crowded lobby.
Richard stood there, shivering despite the summer heat, covered in coffee stains, holding a stack of legal notices that spelled out his complete and utter destruction.
He looked at Julian Mercer, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and rage. "Where is she? Where is Elena?"
Julian closed his briefcase with a quiet snap.
"Mrs. Vance-Barrett is currently resting comfortably at her family's estate in Miami," Julian said, offering a cold, terrifying smile. "She asked me to give you a personal message, Richard."
May you like
"What message?" Richard breathed.
"She said... 'The sixty-eight days are just beginning.'"
