Chapter 6 - THE RED NOTICE (1,800 words)The cheap motel near the Nice Côte d'Azur Airport smelled of stale tobacco and industrial bleach.

Richard Barrett sat on the edge of a sagging mattress, clutching a prepaid burner phone he had bought from an alley vendor for fifty euros. His designer suit was wrinkled and stained; his eyes were bloodshot and wild with sleep deprivation.

Across the room, Eleanor was sitting on a plastic chair, sobbing uncontrollably into a paper towel.

"We have to call the embassy, Richard!" she wailed. "We are American citizens! They can't treat us like this! They took my pearls! They took my Italian leather shoes! I’m wearing plastic sandals from a gas station!"

"Shut up, Mom!" Richard screamed, his knuckles white as he dialed a foreign number on the phone. "The embassy won't help us! They're working with the federal prosecutors! If we go to the embassy, they’ll put us on a military transport back to Florida in leg irons!"

"Then what are we going to do?!" she shrieked. "Vanessa abandoned us! She took her private cash stash and caught a train to Italy!"

"Vanessa is an idiot who's going to get caught at the border," Richard spat. "I have a plan. Elena thinks she’s destroyed me. She thinks she’s locked down all the accounts. But she forgot about her father’s secret vault account in Zurich."

Eleanor stopped sobbing, blinking through her tears. "The Zurich account? The one with the bearer bonds?"

"Yes!" Richard grinned manicly, pulling a small black USB drive from his pocket. "I copied the master security access keys from the floor safe in her bedroom right before I shut the door on her. She was so sick, so out of it, she never even noticed I had cleared out her secret files."

"Can we get to Switzerland?" Eleanor asked, hope flickering in her eyes for the first time in days.

"There’s an old mountain road through Italy into the Swiss border near Lugano," Richard said, jumping up from the bed. "No passport checks if we hire a private driver through the black-market transport app I found. Once we hit Zurich, I present the digital keys at the bank, claim the bearer bonds, and we take a private jet straight to South America. We’ll be living in Argentina with three million cash before Elena even realizes what happened!"

Two hours later, a battered black sedan pulled up to the side entrance of a small private banking office on the outskirts of Zurich.

Rain was pouring down in torrents, pounding against the pavement as Richard and Eleanor scrambled out of the car. They rushed through the heavy oak doors of Bankverein Zurich, shaking the water from their coats.

Inside, the bank was pristine, quiet, and smelled of expensive polished brass and old money. A discreet teller in a three-piece suit greeted them behind a bulletproof glass counter.

"Good afternoon, sir," the teller said in smooth Swiss-German accented English. "How may I assist you?"

Richard pressed his face near the glass, leaning in close, trying to sound confident despite his trembling hands. "I need to execute an emergency redemption of high-value physical bearer bonds under Account Reference Vance-889-Alpha."

The teller’s eyes flicked slightly, but his expression remained perfectly professional. "Do you have the digital authorization key and the physical verification drive, sir?"

"Right here," Richard said, plugging the black USB drive into the transfer tray beneath the glass. "Process it immediately. I want cash and international bank drafts."

"One moment, please, Mr. Barrett," the teller said, typing rapidly on his terminal.

Richard turned to Eleanor, a triumphant, arrogant smirk returning to his face. "See? I told you, Mom. Elena thought she was so smart. But in the end, she’s just an invalid girl who got lucky with a rich dad. She could never outsmart me."

Eleanor squeezed his arm, beaming. "Oh, Richard, I knew you’d save us! As soon as we get to Buenos Aires, I’m buying a brand-new diamond set!"

BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.

A quiet, low-frequency alarm began to pulse softly through the ceiling speakers of the bank.

Richard’s smirk froze. "What is that?"

Before he could pull his hands back from the counter, heavy steel security shutters slammed down over the exit doors behind them with a deafening CRASH.

"Hey! What the hell are you doing?!" Richard yelled, pounding on the counter glass. "Open those doors!"

The teller slowly stepped back from the desk, his hands raised calmly.

The side doors of the lobby burst open. Six heavily armed officers of the Swiss Federal Police, clad in black tactical gear with automatic carbines raised, surged into the room.

"SWISS FEDERAL POLICE! DOWN ON THE GROUND! DO IT NOW!" an officer shouted in English.

"Wait! There's a mistake! I’m an American tourist!" Richard screamed, throwing his hands in the air as two officers tackled him to the marble floor, driving a knee into his back.

"Richard!" Eleanor shrieked as an officer forced her arms behind her back, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists. "Help me! Richard!"

The tactical commander stepped forward, holding a rugged military tablet. He pulled up an image of Richard’s face, cross-referencing it with an Interpol notice displaying a prominent RED NOTICE - LEVEL 1 EXTRADITION.

"Richard Barrett," the commander announced coldly. "You are under arrest pursuant to an international Interpol Red Notice issued by the United States Department of Justice for Grand Larceny, Attempted Homicide, Corporate Fraud, and International Money Laundering."

Richard’s cheek was pressed hard against the cold marble floor. He looked up, crying, his face covered in dust and tears. "It was a mistake! The digital keys were real! Elena Vance gave them to me!"

May you like

The tactical commander looked down at him with utter disgust.

"The digital keys you inserted were not access codes, Mr. Barrett," the officer said coldly. "They were an automated biometric tracer program embedded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. You didn't open a bank vault. You just signed your own confession."
