Chapter 6 - The Freezing of the EmpireThe silence in the grand ballroom was so absolute you could hear the distant hum of the penthouse air conditioning units.

Preston’s knees finally buckled. He dropped back down into his velvet chair, his hands trembling violently as he gripped the edge of the table. His expensive silk tie suddenly looked like a noose tightening around his throat.
"Elena... listen to me," Preston choked out, his voice a pathetic, wheezing whisper. He reached across the table, his fingers clawing desperately toward my wrist, but Miller stepped forward with a subtle, menacing shift of his shoulder, forcing Preston to jerk his hand back. "We can fix this. We’re husband and wife! We can go home, we can talk about—"
"We are legally husband and wife as of right now," I interrupted, my tone slicing through his frantic plea. "Tomorrow morning, my divorce attorneys will file for a complete dissolution of marriage on the grounds of adultery, financial abandonment, and severe psychological abuse. And per our prenuptial agreement—which you so eagerly insisted on drafting seven years ago to protect your hypothetical assets—you signed away all rights to my private holdings."
Preston flinched as if he’d been struck with a cattle prod. The prenuptial agreement. He had forced me to sign it before our wedding day, gloating about how it protected his startup from gold-diggers. He had never bothered to read the reciprocal clauses—clauses inserted by my grandfather’s legal team that completely quarantined my multi-billion-dollar inheritance from marital division while leaving his personal liabilities fully exposed.
"Marcus," I said without breaking eye contact with my shattered husband.
"Yes, Madam Chairwoman," my COO replied, stepping up beside me.
"Execute Protocol Zenith."
"Executing now." Marcus tapped his tablet screen.
Across the ballroom, several prominent investors pulled out their smartphones as automated emergency push notifications buzzed simultaneously in their pockets.
The CEO of a major local municipal bank stared down at his screen, his eyes widening in horror. He looked up at Preston, stood up abruptly from his chair, and spoke loud enough for the entire table to hear: "Vanguard Development’s primary credit lines have just been frozen by Sterling Crown Holdings. All outstanding commercial loans have been recalled with immediate 24-hour demand for full cash settlement."
A collective gasp echoed around the room.
"No!" Preston screamed, lunging across the table again, knocking over his water glass. "You can't do that! That’ll trigger an immediate cross-default across all our active construction sites! We’ll be insolvent by sunrise!"
"You are insolvent by sunrise, Preston," I said calmly. "Your company’s assets are currently being seized by federal receivers to cover your unpaid operational debts to my venture capital portfolio. By tomorrow afternoon, Vanguard Development won't even own the trucks parked in your corporate yard."
Clara Vance, realizing that the billionaire she had latched onto had just transformed into an impoverished, disgraced bankrupt, stood up so fast her chair screeched loudly against the marble floor.
"This is insane," Clara hissed, glaring at Preston with naked disgust. "You told me you were a multimillionaire! You told me you owned this town!" She ripped the diamond necklace from her throat, slammed it down onto the table right in front of him, and turned on her heel, marching out of the ballroom without looking back.
Preston didn't even watch her leave. His gaze remained locked on me, his face hollow, his eyes wide with a terrifying realization of the absolute destruction he had engineered with his own arrogance.
At Table Four, Helen Vance covered her face with her hands, letting out a muffled, hysterical sob as the reality of her social ruin finally crashed down upon her.

I turned slowly away from Preston, refusing to give him another second of my attention.
"Marcus," I said, smoothing the front of my midnight-blue velvet gown. "Let's leave. The air in here is getting rather stale."
