Chapter 2 - The Stolen Heiress(Length: ~1800 words)

The lock on the heavy oak door gave way with a sharp CRACK as two of my father's private security guards forced it open, stepping into the dimly lit study.
Behind them walked my mother, her silk dress rustling frantically, her eyes red and wide with sheer panic. My father stepped in right beside her, his chest heaving, holding a glass of scotch he had poured to steady his nerves.
Renata flinched on the sofa, shrinking back against the leather cushions at the sudden intrusion.
I instantly stepped between my daughter and the men, my body blocking her completely from their sight.
"Get out," I said quietly.
My voice wasn't loud, but the sheer, lethal coldness in my tone made both security guards freeze in their tracks. They knew me. They knew I wasn't just Antonio's son—I was the former chief legal counsel and operational head of the DeLuca Enterprise.
"Mauricio," Antonio began, stepping past his guards, trying to regain his authoritative posture. "Give me those papers. You don't understand the complexity of what happened five years ago. Arthur Vance’s estate was in chaos after his plane went down in the Rockies. The corporate board was collapsing. If his granddaughter’s existence had been revealed, predatory equity funds would have dismantled the company."
"So you stole a toddler?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "You forged municipal intake records, bribed a social worker, and placed Arthur Vance’s biological heir into a state orphanage?"
"We didn't hurt her!" Carmen shrieked, clutching her pearl necklace with trembling hands. "We made sure she was healthy! We knew you were looking to adopt after your divorce! We brought her into our family so she would be taken care of under our roof!"
A bitter, cold laugh escaped my throat—a sound so sharp it echoed off the mahogany bookshelves.
"Taken care of?" I spat, looking my mother directly in her eyes. "You made her scrub grease off Christmas dishes while your 'real' granddaughters opened designer toys ten feet away! You treated her like a servant in her own house because every time you looked at her face, you were reminded of the billions you stole from her!"
Carmen flinched as if I had struck her across the face.
"Listen to me, Mauricio!" Antonio barked, taking a step closer, pointing a shaking finger at my chest. "If those documents reach the State Attorney General, the DeLuca family is ruined! The fraud charges, the identity theft, the corporate embezzlement—it will destroy everything we’ve built over forty years! Your wealth, your status, your inheritance... all of it will vanish overnight!"
"You think I care about your inheritance, Dad?" I walked up to him until my chest was inches from his. "I built my own firm seven years ago without a single dollar of your money. I don't care about your real estate empire. But you put a six-year-old child through four years of emotional abuse to protect a lie."
I turned back to the sofa, lifted Renata into my arms, and wrapped my heavy wool coat securely around her shoulders.
"Daddy?" Renata whimpered, her small fingers clutching the lapels of my suit jacket. "Are we going home?"
"Yes, sweetheart," I whispered into her hair, kissing her cheek. "We're going home. And we are never coming back to this house."
"Mauricio, if you walk out that door with those papers," Antonio warned, his voice dropping into a dark, desperate threat, "I will freeze every joint account, I will pull your corporate licensing through our board connections, and I will make sure you never practice law in this state again!"
I stopped near the shattered doorway, turning my head slightly to look back at my parents standing among the ruins of their study.

"Try it, Antonio," I said smoothly. "Because by eight o'clock tomorrow morning, Vance & Sterling Legal is releasing the forensic audit to the federal prosecutor. You have twelve hours to hire a very good defense attorney."
Without looking back, I carried my daughter down the grand marble staircase, past my sister Paola and her snickering daughters, and walked straight out into the freezing Christmas night.
