Chapter 6 - The Trial of Antonio DeLuca(Length: ~1800 words)

Three months later.

The main sentencing courtroom of the United States District Court was packed to absolute capacity.

Sitting at the defense table in a navy blue prison jumpsuit, handcuffed at his wrists and ankles, was my father, Antonio DeLuca.

His grand, imposing stature was completely gone. His silver hair was cropped short, his skin pale and hollow, and his eyes bloodshot as he stared down at the wooden table in front of him. Beside him sat three of the highest-priced criminal defense attorneys in the country, looking thoroughly exhausted after a ninety-day legal battle they had lost at every single turn.

Sitting across the aisle at the prosecution table, wearing a sharp grey suit, was me, flanked by Samuel Vance and the lead Federal Prosecutor.

Sitting in the front row of the public gallery was my mother, Carmen, wearing a simple black dress without a single piece of jewelry, quietly sobbing into a tissue beside my sister Paola.

Judge Katherine Harrison took her seat at the elevated marble bench, adjusting her reading glasses as she opened the thick case file.

"We are here for final sentencing in the matter of United States v. Antonio DeLuca and DeLuca Enterprise LLC," Judge Harrison announced, her voice echoing clearly through the silent courtroom.

The prosecutor stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, the defendant has pleaded guilty to three felony counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, grand identity theft, and corporate embezzlement involving the estate of the late Arthur Vance."

Judge Harrison looked down from her bench, her sharp eyes locking onto Antonio DeLuca.

"Mr. DeLuca," Judge Harrison declared, her voice dripping with absolute, unyielding severity. "In my twenty-eight years on the federal bench, I have rarely witnessed an act of such calculated, cold, and predatory greed. You took advantage of a dead partner’s tragedy, kidnapped an infant child, falsified municipal records, and attempted to steal a multi-billion-dollar industrial legacy."

Antonio lowered his head onto his folded hands, dry, silent sobs shaking his shoulders.

"It is the sentence of this court," Judge Harrison announced, slamming her wooden gavel down with a thunderous crack, "that you, Antonio DeLuca, be remanded to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons to serve a term of TWELVE YEARS imprisonment without possibility of parole. Furthermore, full restitution of two point four billion dollars is ordered to be returned to the Vance Estate Trust."

CRACK!

The gavel echoed like a thunderclap through the high-ceilinged room.

Two armed federal marshals grabbed Antonio by his arms, dragging him to his feet. As he was marched past the prosecution table toward the side holding cell door, Antonio turned his head, his eyes catching mine one last time.

He looked at me with eyes filled with complete, total ruin, pleading silently for a single drop of parental mercy.

I stood tall, my posture immaculate, looking straight into his eyes with cold, quiet finality.

He had tried to erase a child's identity to build a dynasty. Instead, he had written his own prison sentence.
