Chapter 4 - The Cornered SisterThe reception was a jubilant explosion of laughter, clinking crystal, and rustic mountain charm. String lights crisscrossed the high wooden ceiling of the reception pavilion, casting a warm, golden glow over long tables laden with roasted meats, artisanal cheeses, and towering glass jars of local cider.

Marcus and I had just finished our first dance to a hauntingly sweet acoustic tune when guests flooded the dance floor, pulling us into a whirlwind of hugs, congratulations, and shared drinks.

I stepped away for a brief moment to use the restroom in the back corridor of the barn, needing a quiet second to catch my breath and let the overwhelming joy of the evening settle into my bones.

As I pushed open the heavy wooden door of the restroom, washed my hands, and checked my makeup in the antique mirror, the door clicked shut behind me with a sharp, echoing snap.

I turned around.

Vanessa was standing blocking the exit.

She had shed her formal demeanor entirely. Her hair was slightly disheveled from the dancing, her breathing was shallow and rapid, and her eyes were bloodshot and wild.

“You couldn't just have a normal wedding, could you?” Vanessa hissed, her voice vibrating with suppressed venom. “You always have to make everything about you.”

I crossed my arms over my lace bodice, refusing to shrink back. “Hello to you too, Vanessa. Nice to see you enjoying the party.”

“Cut the crap, Darcy,” she snapped, taking a sharp step forward. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger directly at my left wrist. “Where did you get that?”

I looked down at Grandma Eleanor’s gold bracelet, resting securely against my skin. “Frank gave it to me right before the ceremony.”

“Don't lie to me!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking. “That was supposed to be mine! Grandma promised it to me years ago! You manipulated that old man into handing over family property just to stick it to me and Mom!”

“Grandma Eleanor didn't promise you a damn thing, Vanessa,” I replied, my voice cool, steady, and entirely devoid of fear. “She entrusted it to Frank specifically because she knew how you and Mom operated. She knew you’d pawn it the second your next business venture went under.”

Vanessa’s face contorted into a mask of pure rage. She lunged forward, her hand clawing toward my wrist as if she meant to rip the antique jewelry off my arm by force.

I reacted instantly, stepping backward and swatting her hand away with a sharp, authoritative slap against her wrist.

“Don't you ever touch me,” I warned, my eyes locking onto hers with a lethal intensity that made her freeze in her tracks. “This wedding is over, my husband is waiting outside, and I am not the little sister you can push around anymore.”

Vanessa chest heaved as she fought for breath, tears of pure frustration spilling over her eyelashes. She realized she had lost control of the narrative.

“You think you won, don't you?” Vanessa whispered, her voice dropping into a dark, menacing register. “You think because you got a shiny piece of metal and a nice wedding that you’re safe. You have no idea what’s in that letter, Darcy. You haven't even opened it, have you?”

I stared at her, my heart skipping a beat. “What letter?”

May you like

A cold, triumphant smirk spread across Vanessa’s tear-stained face.

“Grandma didn't just leave you a bracelet,” Vanessa laughed, a harsh, brittle sound. “She left a letter. And when you finally read what she wrote about our family... it’s going to destroy everything you think you know.”
